To quote another post in another thread on this site...

5.1
3 in the front
2 in the rear/side
1 subwoofer

6.1 add one in the back
7.1 add two in the back

Default Should I purchase the Sony BDP-BX1 At Costco

Hi, I have reserached this and I can't get any answers. I currenty have a 2 1/2 year old 50" Vizio TV which has 2 HDMI inputs, no optical. My Home Theater Samsung just stopped working took it back to Costco. I ordered the SoundOn Wireless speakers and now I am looking for a DVD or DVD/Blue Ray Player. I think it will be hooked up as follows:
Comcast Cable Box to TV HDMI1
DVD/BDP to TV HDMI2
Opitcal cable between Cable Box and DVD/BDP Player
Wireless center speaker to DVD/BDP Player through 6 RCA Jacks

First I would like to know if that will work, will it give me sound on everything? Second does the Sony BDP-BX1 have 6 RCA jacks I cannot find that information in any of the specifications?

If it the Sony BDP-BX1 will not work, do you have any recommendations I am at a loss. Thanks!

Default Costco electronics

To those concerned with comments about Costco and refurbished or second rate component parts, you should rest assured. Costco very specifically does not sell such "seconds". I have sold to Costco as one of their vendors in computer products for years, and there is one thing they make very clear. You are provided a document when registering as a vendor representative that is crystal clear that you must agree to or you are not allowed to sell to Costco. You agree to abide by all laws, that your dealings will be truthful and honest, and you specifically represent that you do not sell them seconds, or any items that are inferior in any way to the same products you sell to other businesses.

The differences in model numbers is a manufacturer's response to retailer complaints about internet resellers and discounters selling at low margins. Many times the exact same unit is sold under a different model number to avoid direct cost comparisons between retailers. In other cases, the different model designation can be due to minor differences, such as the inclusion of a connecting cable, or in the case of the Sony DVD player, a backlit remote. This solves a couple of problems for manufacturers, including direct price comparison issues, and use of advertising money, and providing differentiation for a retailer who wants to offer greater value to their customers.

All in all, I would never hesitate to buy a product from Costco. And as for the "19 year old" box slappers, Costco employees rank among the best. Just ask any of them why they work at Costco instead of somewhere else? They will usually tell you Costco pays better wages, provides better benefits, and generally treats their employees better than any of their competitors. When employees are well treated, they respect their jobs and customer more. I worry more about the retailers you read about that lay off their higher paid employees, seeking to replace them with lower cost, lesser trained staff.

Thought this would be useful for those reading this thread:

From November 27, 2008 through December 1, 2008, Costco.com has the BDP-BX1 w/ HDMI cable for $189.99 + tax (Shipping included).

Costco warehouses also have this player for $187.99.

Default Need Help with BDP-BX1

Hi,
FIRST POST.
I OWN A WESTINGHOUSE 52" LCD 1080P TV AND I HAVE THE BDP-X1 HOOKED UP TO IT. THE PICTURE LOOKS GOOD. HOWEVER, I'M NOT GETTING THAT TRUE BLUE RAY DVD PICTURE THAT YOU SEE ON TVs AT THE RETAIL STORES.

THE PICTURE LOOKS LIKE A REGULAR HD DVD,BUT NOT LIKE A BLUE RAY PICTURE.

I HAVE IT CONNECTED TO AN HDMI MONSTER CABLE I BOUGHT AT BB WITH THE FASTEST RATING.

I HAVE ALSO DOWNLOADED THE FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR THE BDP-BX1 AND STILL NOT GETTING A TRUE BLUE RAY PICTURE.

I'M STARTING TO THINK THAT IT'S MY TV AND NOT THE BLUE RAY,BUT WHEN THE DVD IS IN THE MENU SCREEN SHOWING THE MOVIE SCENES IN THE BACKGROUND. THE SCENES LOOK LIKE TRUE BLUE RAY PICTURE. HOWEVER,WHEN THE MOVIE STARTS TO PLAY, IT LOSES THAT BLUE RAY LOOK.

I HAVE TRYED THE MOVIES: HANCOCK AND TROPIC STORM.
THIS BLUE RAY MOVIES LOOK AMAZING WHEN PLAYING AT THE STORES,BUT NOT THE SAME PICTURE ON MY TV.

HAVE CALLED TV MANUFACTURES HELP DESK AND THEY HAVE NO CLUE OF HOW TO FIX IT.

I NEED HELP BEFORE MY TIME TO RETURN THE BDP-BX1 EXPIRES.
THANKS.

Have you had your TV calibrated? If not, have it done with either a Blu-ray calibration disc or, if you can afford it, professionally. You might even be able to find what others on this site who have your TV have there settings at. Either way get it calibrated somehow and it will make a huge differance.

i just got the bdp bx1 at the fullerton, ca costco for $189. great player for a great price.

i am not a hardcore av junkie so all i ask for is a nice clear picture and good sound while watching a movie. this player does the job i want it to do.

the player goes via a hdmi connection to a sony 52" bravia blah blah lcd i got at costco as well.

audio goes to a older marantz amp with no surround sound etc. sound is generated by a pair of b&w p5 speakers.

costco has the BEST customer service i have ever encountered. it is no wonder that circuit city is going bankrupt and i cant recall the last time i bought anything from best buy.

the return policy is amazing and i have never had any hassles returning stuff.

Default Bdp-bx1

I bought the BDP-BX1 at the Costco in Christiana, DE on 12-15 for $229. The Bravia 40" 120hz TV with Internet Video Link I bought 2 weeks ago at Costco in New Wales, PAfor $1,349 was $1,499 in DE. Model numbers of the Sony Bravia are also different than other stores and the website. Guess you just need to be lucky in this economy!

I bought the BX1 at Costco on Black Friday because it was $189. I thought all BD players were the same. I am seeing that they are not.

I have a couple of questions about BD players.

I see no slow motion or frame by frame available. Is this so for all BD players? It has been standard on DVD since the beginning.

I bought a BD player to play BD discs. The first several were BD discs. When I have played a couple of DVD's, I noticed that the player automatically scaled them to theater wide mode. Since the DVD's were "widescreen" I would have expected them to play in a full screen mode, where the top and sides are out to the edges.

On a side note, am I a minority? I cannot stand seeing any programming stretched wide. If I am watching a 4:3 tv show, I either watch it that way, or I might stretch it in both dimensions where I might lose the top and bottom.

The only way I can get my player to go full screen is to turn off scaling and, when it puts out a 4:3 widescreen, I go to zoom mode on the TV.

I am using the player with a Bravia Sync Sony TV.

Any discussion would be welcome.

There are many "Black Bars" discussions on these threads. Search and you shall see. It is a little thing called "Original Aspect Ratio" or "OAR". Basically it is the way the movie was intended to be viewed. You can stretch the movie to fill your screen but why?
