Sigh...
It's Elf! Zero motion, low range on the soundtrack, and I can't remember and darks, much less blacks. Maybe they coulda used a BD-9 and we wouldn't know the difference.

First off, and I am going to be as nice as possible since people seem to not get this, THIS DISC MAY HAVE BEEN CREATED/ENCODED WHEN WB/NL WAS STILL SUPPORTING HD-DVD. Meaning they went by their limitations (or standards, whichever word would describe it).

Second, it's a short movie. A BD-25 is probably more than enough space.

There are several night scenes in the film... the ending most notably.

That being said, New Line could do a decent quality transfer on a BD25, I'm just hoping for a "lossless" soundtrack, and am disappointed by the exclusion of several special features. That being said, I have the DVD, and I don't think I ever watched the special features, so no big loss for me.

I'm just hoping for "lossless" and a decent transfer, and if so, I'll be happy!

This is actually a very good possibility as Josh seems to imply on the front page that it has a DTS-HD MA soundtrack (compared to Dolby Digital or Dolby TrueHD). New Line may have encoded it last year and decided to hold off until this year to take advantage of Favreau's "Iron Man".

Prepare to be wildly refuted by Lgans half page of bit-rate data. That will show you to be optimistic!!

I'm not disagreeing just clarifying - serious action (motion) and blacks like Underworld. And we haven't even seen or heard it yet.

My understanding of the situation is that Warner has basically exclusive contracts with certain BD manufacturers and so they are guaranteed a certain number of BD-50s in advance. They seem to be dumping titles that aren't going to be big sellers to BD-25 as there are no manufacturing or pressing concerns with them. But if they honestly don't think a title will sell that much why not put it on a BD-50? It's not like Elf at this point is going to come out on Blu-ray and sell 250,000 copies. It tells me the people in charge of Warner's decision making think the target audience for Elf on Blu-ray don't care about technical specifications and will buy anything they put out.

The one thing that really pisses me off is when a movie comes out with NO hd audio. I( along with people here) pay a premium for the best. EVERY movie should have an HD audio track, PERIOD.

As for the use of BD 25 disk, if they can fit 1080p video and a HD sound track, I could care less of what size disk they use.

But for a newer movie not having an HD track is just plain BS.

Hey, Sony only gave Maximum Risk a 25GB disc, and you don't see us Van Damme fans *****ing and moaning about it. If Elf were going to sell a bunch of copies, they'd have the BD-50's to spare. As is, it's a film that's a few years old and probably never sold too well to begin with.

Did people miss a big part of the original posters big gripe? It's not just the fact that it's on a BD-25. It's that special features are being left off from the DVD. Either Warner is just screwing us over to release a double dip in the future, or they just won't fit on the BD-25.

And I have a feeling it won't get DTS-HDMA track. It probably will get a lossless track, but I'd bet it's True HD (not that I care either way). It does seem like Warner's catalog division understands that we want lossless audio. The message just hasn't gotten through to the new release division.

Elf made 173 million at the u.s. box office and I'm sure sold very well on DVD when it was released....this is not Semi-Pro we are talking about...

It might have sold decent when it first released, years ago. I doubt it would move that many copies now.

I read the OP and skimmed through the rest, is there an actual release date with link for this movie?

Idk, I just think that all the new releases should be lossless. Idk I guess there are just some cataloge titles that i dont get that upset about if they dont have lossless, that is just me. By some I mean, non action movies like when a christmas story didnt have it last year and some other non action movies. That's just me though

For some of us, we're double or triple dipping on a title for Blu-ray. If it doesn't have "lossless", that means we'll have to dip again in a few years... if we're lucky to get another dip (I have some DVDs with non-anamorphic widescreen that have yet to get a double-dip on DVD).

As for "A Christmas Story", the mono track would most likely show a very small improvement in "lossless" audio, but "Elf", a movie only a few years ago with a 5.1 soundtrack would most likely show much more improvement.

I know I agree with this, but Elf will probably have a lossless track. The cataloge movies I speal of are some of these older 80's movies that people whine about. I mean what people want is there own thing and that is fine with me. I think any movie that was made from the mid 90's on shoudl definitely have lossless sound. I am sick of warner not going all out even if a movie didn't do great such as Speed Racer and Fred Claus. That is a joke!

I do agree. I won't double dip on Elf but probably won't on "A Christmas Story" either as I already had it on DVD and have it on Blu. Is that (technically) a triple dip? Hold on a sec - lemme see if I have it on VHS. . .

I think EVERY movie should have "lossless" sound, but I am aware that some won't show MUCH improvement.

I'll probably wait until reviews come in on "Elf" as I REALLY like the film, but I REALLY want "lossless" on this title to hear Zooey's singing ... (for the record, she does sing during the credits as well).
