I bought the UK Blu-ray of this. It is much, much cheaper for those of us in the US.

International cut of Warlords Blu-ray on Amazon.co.uk

However it is the International cut running 110 minutes rather than the 126 minutes for the HK version.

Reading the plot on wikipedia article on the movie, it seems there were some plot changes for the International cut.

I just finished watching Red Cliff 1 & 2 yesterday and absolutely loved them and am looking for more. Is "The Warlords" comparable?

IMHO Warlords is good , and worth owning (I have both) but Red Cliff is better

Agreed. THE WARLORDS is excellent but RED CLIFF I & II is better.

Watched Warlords the other night. I bought the UK edition from Amazon UK.

Here goes:

The Movie - Excellent film and one of my favs from this genre. The acting is top notch, the production values are great, and the pacing and story-arc are just about perfect. Its got a good blend of tangible drama with some truly cool battles. This is a character-driven story with a few battles and fights mixed in - not the other way around which is often what you get with these types of films(sometimes thats OK too but not all the time!). Each character has enough depth for you to understand their thinking even though you might disagree with some of their choices and decisions. If anything, this film could have been slightly longer and they could have fleshed out things a little more. The only weakness would be the "love-triangle"(for lack of a better phrase) that doesnt get quite enough weight & screen time for it to really resonate with the viewer. Still, I was very much into this film and I feel it has excellent replay value. It might not end like you want it too, but not every movie does. Great addition to my collection.

The Video - Metrodome did this release and as usual, their disc stats arent accurate. The film is framed in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio although the label says 16x9 or 1.85. There are some dream-like sequences in this film that are slightly washed out and diffused. Other than that, the image quality is very much blu-ray and should please viewers. The outdoor shots are best and you will see some noise in dark interior scenes but that seems to be the norm. This release was shot on film and there is a fine layer of grain visible in many scenes that adds to the viewing pleasure. Detail is excellent if just short of reference. The color palette is fairly standard without any hue preference that I could detect. Reds are red. Beige sand is beige. Looks good to me.

The Audio - This release offers up a Mandarin DTS MA track that is excellent in pretty much every way. The subtitles are easy to read, the dialog is clear and easy to hear should you be chinese-speaking, and the sound effects are very palpable and "there". Bass is tight and not boomy or unrealistic. The battle scene sounds were dynamic and what I call thumpin'. There are some Cannon shots fired during some of the battles and they are accurate sounding without being overly-loud. Great balance here since sometimes explosions or whatever can be too loud or obnoxious.

So, this disc and movie are a "winner" in my opinion.

Movie - 4 stars out of 5
Video - 4 stars out of 5
Audio - 4.5 stars out of 5

It's a great movie, but be aware that UK disc is the cut International version of the movie. UK movie is 110 minutes long whereas the uncut HK version is 126 minutes long. There are some significant plot changes as well as cut scenes on the International version.

Hmmm.... thanks for the heads up. Funny how I mentioned that the film could have been a little longer and fleshed things out better!

Id like to see this longer cut.

Amazon.com put a blu-ray listing up for it a 2-3 weeks ago, so it should be released in the US in the near future.

Hopefully they release the full 126 minute version, as Magnolia is releasing the full 288 minute version of Red Cliff already.

There are a directors cut coming out in UK real soon and that´s the original version (longer cut). Hope it will have good quality since it´s bound to be cheaper than HK version

Can you provide a link to the upcoming release of The Warlords in the UK? I didn't find a listing for any new edition on Amazon UK. I did run across a German Director's Cut Ironpak edition the other day:

I've been wondering the same thing. If it ends up being Region free or AB then I might take a chance on it

Looks like they're showing the 130 minute version here in the US on the big screen beginning April 2. I'd wager Magnolia releases the 130 minute version on Blu-ray in the next few months.
