Also appears to have SACD support and DVD-A support.

It appears to be a 2.0 player.

Hopefully this will have free region DVD playback and PAL->NTSC conversion (that works on BD extras encoded in PAL).

Speculative price seems to be between $500-$700. Speculative release date is sometime in Early 09.

Default Oppo BDP-83

Oppo Digital showed a prototype Blu-ray player that is scheduled to hit the market sometime in the winter. In addition to playing Blu-ray Discs, the BDP-83, as it's now called, will also upscale standard DVDs, and play audio CDs and SACDs. DVD-A support is still up in the air. Also up in the air is the price, which will be "no more than $800" according to a company spokesperson. The player has 1GB of onboard memory and a USB input.

I'm very excited about this player. I might finally have found a suitable replacement for my PS3. If I had to guess the player will be priced around $599 to $699 given Oppo's history.

I am sure that the upscailing capabilities of the player will be fantastic. The more CE manufacturers in the Blu game , the better.

This does shape up to be a very nice player but anyone who thinks that this will be under $600 is just fooling themselves.

Any updates on this unit. I was going to get a Panasonic BD50 and use my current Oppo 970 for SD. This new Oppo would solve the problem of two units.I want the onboard audio decode feature.
By the way I do love my Oppo and their support is fantastic.

I've seen rumors that this player might be out as early as this December and that it might need firmware updates down the line to unlock its full capabilities. I guess that might be the price we pay as consumers for Oppo to get this player out early.

An avs member contacted oppo and they said it'd be available in two months' time. So definitely 2009.

As to pricing, it will be "more than the panny 55, sony 550 its aimed at being a bargain compared to the $2000 DENON and the $1000 Pioneer according to them." Very likely to be more than $500.

Just received this e-mail today:

OPPO BDP-83 Blu-Ray Disc Player Update

Thank you for signing up to receive information about our upcoming OPPO BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player. We appreciate your interest, and would like to update you on the current development status of this exciting new product.

One of the major design goals for the BDP-83 is to deliver first-class video quality for both Blu-ray and DVD. We based and expanded upon our top-of-the-line DV-983H up-converting DVD player and fully utilize the unparalleled performance of the VRS by Anchor Bay video processing solution. You can expect all the high-end video features including Source Direct for DVD and Blu-ray, high definition HDMI scaling, Edge and Detail Enhancement options, and 1080p24Hz output for both Blu-ray and DVD.

We did not stop at just video performance. We further refined the audio stage, including the addition of discrete stereo outputs and increasing the power and efficiency of the power supply. For SACD playback, the BDP-83 supports direct DSD over HDMI and DSD-to-analog without any PCM conversion, a very unique feature.

With the BDP-83, we intend to release a full-featured universal Blu-ray Disc player that supports BD Profile 2.0 (BD-Live), DVD, SACD, DVD-Audio, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio. As of this writing, the BDP-83 supports BD Profile 1.1 (BONUSVIEW), DVD-Video, SACD, and bitstreaming of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Progress is being made on a daily basis as our engineers work diligently around the clock to further enable DVD-Audio, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio onboard decoding, and BD Profile 2.0.

The BDP-83 is currently undergoing an extensive and thorough Beta Test Program. We greatly appreciate all the feedback from our beta testers, as without their hard work and extraordinary attention to detail, the BDP-83 would not be the high quality product that our customers have come to expect from us.

As many of our customers eagerly anticipate the release of the BDP83, we are contemplating a "BDP-83 Early Adoption Program" in late December or early January. This program will make available a limited number of units so you can purchase and experience the current implementation of the BDP-83's feature set, with the ability to download firmware as new features become available. The estimated price for the BDP-83 is around $499 to $599.

OPPO Digital is a consumer-oriented company that listens carefully to customer opinions and values their feedback. If it were not for our customers' feedback and support, OPPO would not be where we are today. At OPPO we strive to provide our customers with quality products reinforced by exceptional customer service.

Interesting. I definitely like Oppo. One reason I got my Panny 55 is because Oppo looked like their player was months down the line. Priced at $499 or so, would still be almost $200 more than what I paid for my Panny. Real curious to see if they will be doing Region Free and supporting PAL and NTSC built in...

Worst case, wait for the price to drop a little in the spring and maybe sell teh Panny and get it.

I bought the panny 55k cause I thought the Oppo player was going to come out later than Early '09. I'm still going to pick one up. When is the best time? When it just comes out or wait to see if there are any bugs?

Keep in mind guys the release date and price quoted are for the "Early Adoption Program" only. An official release date for the BDP-83 has not been given yet and the price could go up from the quoted $499-$599.

The player supports both PAL and NTSC playback but I haven't tested PAL to NTSC conversion. I will try that tomorrow with my BD of REC. No region free though, sorry guys. May have a hack for DVD at some point but definitely not for BD.

And don't look for the price to go up.....

According to this article from whathifi, the BDP might be out by next month or as early as next week. I am calling my Oppo dealer to see if he can get his paws on one for me.
