Default OPPO DVD players: Is their CD playback really good?

I know in video terms they are the best Benchmark has tested, besting 3-5 grand players.. Is the audio portion just as good.. comparable to a 1,000 CDP?

I own the Oppo DV-980H model. In my experience, its SACD and DVD-A playback is awesome. I have experience with different brands of CD players (Denon, Pioneer, Sony, Rotel, Carver, NAD). Oppo is as good as any CD player below $1,000. Can you compare it with a $5,000 CD player? Of course, not. Oppo players are mostly priced below $300. Read some of the reviews:

how do these stack up "truly" in terms of dvd upconversion/scaling etc.....

i know the reviews are good but are they really worth 200 or 400 dollars if you already own a blu-ray player. i would be curious to know from someone who actually owns one, especially the flagship model.

i own a panny bd-30 and a sony s300 and the s300 looks a great deal better with its dvd playback, and the panny30 looks pretty crappy, just what can these oppo players do for a dvd.

Their upscaling is pretty good, particularly the flagship model. I bought mine for SACD and DVD-A playback and HDMI connection. It only cost me $150. If you already own a Blu-ray player that does a good job of upconverting and you don't care for SACD/DVD-A playback, you don't need it. The Panasonic Blu-ray player is not considered to be a good player for upconverting.

as previously posted, there are a number of reviews out there that show you its capability. as mighty as svs is as well as hsu, this internet based company is also its counterpart, focusing its needs towards building a 'higher' end upconverting dvd.

before the dawn of blu-ray and hd dvds came out, they definitely held their own compared to even higher end dvd-players. for more advanced consumers, this is the choice in my opinion. not only racks up against the best, but sometimes supercedes them by benchmark..
System is very busy now.

I own the Panny BD-30 and the Oppo 983. You're right about the Panny being not so good as an upscaler. The Oppo is outstanding. Worth $400.00? I personally like having dedicated players for Blu Rays and DVDs so to me it is well worth the $400.00 I paid. Highly recommended.

i do have to note tho, that even tho this is an amazing player, it all depends on the consumer if its still worth it to purchase an oppo at this pricepoint, or just purchase a blu-ray player instead.

mind you some blu-ray players decoders for upscaling/upconverting arent as good as expected, including the panny bd50.

Or if the Op not in a hurry, can always wait for the Oppo BD player that should also do SACD and maybe DVD-audio. I don't have any personal experience with them but am planning to buy their BD when it comes out.

Hopefully it up-converts DVDs and plays back SACD/CDs just as well as their current players that seem to have a very high reputation.
