So my friends have a band, and one of them is huge into vinyl. There's a great local store that sells players/vinyls. Long story short, I'd like to get an entry level one to see if I want to get further into this. Budget is $200 to start for the player, but if all goes well, I will definitely be willing to upgrade at a later date. Used/new doesn't matter, so if audiogon has some good deals I'm open to suggestions. I mostly want to test out vinyl in my system and see if I like it. If it doesn't work out, at least I've got something cool that may get some use for not a lot of money, and if I do like the sound, upgrading will be easy. Thanks!
And my apologies for starting yet another vinyl thread, but I didn't want to hijack another persons. |

Definately check out A-gon, but don't forget about the power of spreading the word around to your friends and family about your new found interest and intention. I'll bet you any money that someone knows someone else who has a turntable lying around they've done nothing with for years. You might be able to get one for free!
However, having said that, I would save up a few more dollars and get a new one. One to consider is the entry-level Pro-ject Turntable. It comes complete with a cartridge. (You may have to change the cartridge on a used one and you would then almost be at the price of a new table anyway). Here's the link for Pro-ject Turntables: http://www.sumikoaudio.net/project/products/debut.htm You're probably going to get quite a bit of advice and opinion to this thread as there are several vinyl lovers on this forum. They are very passionate about their love for vinyl and you'll be able to learn a lot and get tremendous insights. Welcome to the superior world of the vinyl sound!

Wow there seems to be quite a demand again for Vinyl, which is awesome.
I know a lot of DJs still using it, but I have actually not listened to any for like 12 years now (when my last player broke). I got about 50-60 (mostly 7") from various Punk/Hardcore bands and now am really thinking about buying another player!!
Life is just a form of animated death.

Anyone know anything about Stanton? I know that they sell them at the vinyl place near me, seems to be a dj (obviously) turntable, so not sure what the audio quality is on this. |

I picked up a cheap Audio Technica player today along with Thirteenth Step and A Weekend in the City for my first two records to give vinyl a shot. It's definitely a different sound, not sure if I like it more than a cd or not. I do enjoy owning records over cd's though, so that's one plus. I'll have to give it more of a listen, and I'm sure owning a better quality player will change things, but for right now just trying this out.

I got a used Linn AXIS table, replaced with a Ortofon 2M Red Cartridge (better than the used original). Costed me 400$ total. I bought like for 800$ of LP in 2 months! LOL Lot's of used and new. Rare stuff is going to rape me tought. www.musicstack.com is a pretty good place to start, lot's of stuff, most of the time better price than Ebay.
If you're serious later about this. Plan to get a Phono Stage. One of the best under 500$ is the Cambridge 640p at 160$US. Wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better than my 3808ci phono section.
Material : Denon 3808ci, 2xParadigm Monitor 9 v5, 1xCC390, 2xADP390, 2xADP190, Panasonic AE3000 96hz 1080p, 106' screen, Samsung BDP-2550
