Flags of our Fathers, Coming to America, Trading Places and Failure to Launch

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced a trio of titles for high definition home video, starting with previously delayed 'Failure to Launch (Special Collector's Edition)' which is now on tap for an April 24 release on HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

On May 22, 'Flags of our Fathers' will make its highly anticipated HD DVD and Blu-ray debut in a two-disc set ala Paramount's previous big seller 'M:i:3' set. Speaking of Mission Impossible and May 22, the first two films previously only available on HD DVD and Blu-ray via the Ultimate Missions box set will be sold individually for the first time on this day.

The following month on June 5, Paramount will release 'Coming to America (Special Collector's Edition)' and 'Trading Places (Special Collector's Edition).' While 'Trading Places' is listed for release on HD DVD and Blu-ray, 'Coming to America' is currently only lsited for Blu-ray Disc, which we presume means Paramount either forgot or will announce the HD DVD counterpart shortly. Like 'Failure to Launch,' both appear to be a single-disc edition with a standard DVD counterpart.

I wonder what the chances are that the Trading Places print will have been cleaned up before they did the transfer?.

I love that movie, but if the extra resolution only enhances the dirt, I'll pass. I wish the studios would do some preservation work on some of these older titles before offering them on Hi Def formats. They should send them to Lowry Digital.

Trading places is a hoot. Will pick this one up and sell off my standard version.Hope it looks better than the dvd.

I wouldn't read much into it, sounds like a mistake, the interesting thing would be to see which codecs they are using, I remember watching Trading Places and thinking it was vary grainy, so it could be a real test for AVC on Blu-ray, and VC-1 on HD DVD especially.

According to IMDB they are both produced by Warner and Dreamworks SKG with some distribution involvement from Paramount.

Flags: Dreamworks (USA) - Warner (non-USA)

So, I'm not sure what to make of this. Why wouldn't Paramount be distributing Letters? And is Flags basically the first Dreamworks title?

If they produced the movie then yes. And I'm sure they'll be watching the sales numbers very closely.

One thing to be careful about on comparing numbers..the abundance of quality titles on BD probably skews the same titles to HD-DVD's benefit...at least on first blush.

For example I haven't picked up the Departed yet because I really wanted the Prestige .. eventually will get it .. but HD-DVD doesn't have those kinds of dilemmas

I agree with this point 100%. If there were only 10 really good titles on Blu-ray then we would all buy all 10. This is the case with HD-DVD as they have released like 3 good movies in the past 5 months. However with the abundance of Blu-ray releases it becomes very expensive to purchase each and every one of them. However the overall numbers are clearly still showing that while individual movies released onto both formats might favor HD in percentages, BD is still clearly outselling and will only continue to grow.

Trading Places? Not even a very good looking DVD. Mono sound too. If Paramount is trying to promote Eddie Murphy they could at least have done Beverly Hills Cop or 48 HRS instead. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Trading Places quite a bit, it's just not something that I think of on Blu-ray when it comes to "gee wouldn't this be great in HD?"

Trading Places is just as good as EM's other movies from that timeframe. None of them are going to win any awards for picture or sound quality, but they're all pretty funny.

At the early days of a new format, studios know they can throw movies at us we usually wouldnt buy JUST BECAUSE it is in a new format. So you will get movies like this, Scooby Doo and others early on because its a MUCH easier sell then 3-4 years into the life of a format.

BTW, i absolutely loved Trading Places =)

I got my "information" from the trailers.

I THOUGHT Flags was distributed in the US by Paramount but I can't raise the trailer now. But if Dreamworks itself released it, then it's logical that Paramount would be distributing/producing the home video version.

For Letters, the first studio logo is Warner.
