Does anyone know if the ultimate collectors edition will be better than the previously released bluray edition. I excitedly bought it when it was first released and it was complete garbage! stereo audio and lackluster video quality comparable to the DVD!
I know the second release of full metal jacket was much better, crossing my fingers that the same will go for this film... |

By the way, the original movie was mono... so the last Blu-Ray was mono, too, and not even stereo.
I wouldn't expect any stunning visual improvement from this very low budget - but beloved - film. And I definitely wouldn't be too excited about a bad fake 5.1 or stereo mix. |

It's gonna be the same encode. It was reported on the front page news a while back.

Considering that this was a low budget film released in the 80's I think it looks great. I don't understand why people wish to have a mono, mostly dialog driven movie remixed in super duper 7.1 surround. The movie would not benefit from it, the mono soundtrack is adequate. This is not an effects driven movie, it would benefit very little from surround remixing.

Found this on amazon:
I know its hard to read, but if you look closely in the grid, you can see that the specs looks to be the exact same as what we've already got. Just some new cover and (probably) disc art. Then you have the big tin that comes with all the little extras, which I'm probably gonna double dip on, but maybe I'll just stick with the DVD, cause Warners doesn't seem to want to make this one of those ones that improves with blu (too bad MGM doesn't still have the rights, imagine what they- through Fox- could do, DTS HD and a bunch of BD only extras). |

How would the MONO soundtrack that is mainly DIALOG benefit from DTS-HD?? It did improve moving to blu-ray, it has 1080 video resolution. Be thankful there is a blu-ray at all.

Eh I think I'll pass...there's nothing great about this double dip...except the cookie cutters I guess. Anyone know how big the tin will be? Will it be BD size or dvd size?

Oh come on that car chase scene with Ralphie and when him and his family go to that Metallica concert DTS-HD would make this movie kickass.

This isn't even a double-dip, it's just a packaging change. I got my copy of the "new" Blu-ray Disc today (without the cookie jar), and the specs are exactly the same as the Disc released 12/5/06. I haven't opened it to watch it yet, but I was hoping that there would be something new that had been left out of the press release. This can only be recommended for those who don't already have this on Blu-ray.

It would be kind of fun to hear "the old man" cursing and clanking around in the cellar as he tries to get the furnace working. Or the Bumpus dogs running through the livingroom with the Christmas turkey. But I don't think the studio is going to spend the money to do it.

Just adding a second note that this is the exact same disc as the previous release. The final proof -- I watched a few minutes of the "new" disc (coming 11/4) and then I put in the "old" release and my PS3 read it as the same BD and started playing from the same spot.
