Unhappy sony s550 network wont work

i just got the 550 the other day. i got everything working except the network. i am in IT so the basics work on my network(modem/router setup using dhcp) and the same connection works for my xbox 360. anybody have any ideas? its basically not picking up an ip address, almost like the nic is disabled.

Have you checked the default gateway, subnetmask, DNS settings? Just double check, its easy to overlook these and make a mistake.

Also are you using a static IP address for the Sony BDP-S550? If you are using DHCP then make sure your router is set to accept the number of IP addresses greater than the number of devices in your home.

Lastly, I suppose if your wireless router is not secured or even if it is secured, there is possible another device trying to use the same IP address as the Sony BDP-S550.

Hope this helps.

Also, if you have an SSID and security password or passphrase set up on your router the S550 has to be setup EXACTLY as the router. Also the SSID and password are case sensitive so be careful entering them.

I don't think the BDP-S550 has wireless.

My Bad!! I have my S550 wired to a wireless bridge so it is essentially wireless as far as Internet access is concerned. I was mixing up the wireless bridge and the S550. Sorry for the inconvenience and misunderstanding on my part.

Is it DHCP capable, and is the DHCP enabled?

If not, then you may have to manually add an IP address/subnet mask/gateway/DNS servers that mesh with your network.

It doesn't sound like you could have two different players with the same problem (possible though), so I'm shocked that tech support isn't able to help you with such a seemingly simple problem.

My first 550 was a Circuit City purchase for $399 plus tax. I plugged it in and it could not find the network. I went to bed and the next morning I checked and it was connected fine. I think the router renewed the IP address overnight. I subsequently ordered one from Amazon for $329 and returned the CC one. The second one found the network right away, although I was surprised and did not expect it to.

Hey folks I seem to be having connection issues as well. I am wired directly to the router, but for some reason it seems the player keeps losing the connection.
Currently using DHCP, but not sure if I should use a static IP instead.
I am not an IT guy, but I do have some very basic knowledge of network setup.
To get the connection to work I have to keep going back into the Internet settings and updating them. I do this almost everytime I try to connect to any BD Live features.
Any help would be appreciated

Ok, that seems fine, so perhaps we need to tweak your router. Check for the DHCP lease time. If it is short, you may want to extend it.

Try resetting your router, or just unplugging your modem for 10 seconds.

Sometimes, the simpliest things, are the best.

Make sure MAC filtering is not enabled on the router, or add the Sony's MAC if you are using it.
