I was just about to make a thread on this, but I think that as a community we should start directing more people towards stand alone players who will not be using them for gaming. It is time for bluray to take the spotlight, and all of the critics dont want to point towards the ps3 as the reason bluray is taking off, so lets not give them a reason. We all know how amazing the ps3 is, and the value if you also are a gamer. But for those only using movies I suggest we recommend stand alones. That is my two cents, what do you guys think? I just dont think it is the right player for everyone out there that it gets recommended to.

I've noticed in some instances people say "PS3" without reading. Like today, a fellow was saying he has legacy equipment he wants to keep, but get lossless audio. People were telling him "PS3 all the way" when that won't do anything for him.

*edit* Oh yeah, forgot to add, I would say the new Panasonic is probably right up there right now.

I really really like denon, but I think they need to come out with one more generation before they have the price/performance factor right. The downfalls to the denon are that none of them are BD2.0, which means you can not get bd live internet features, no updating via internet, and there are now faster models out as far as load times. Their picture and sound quality are excellent though. Right now I am more of a fan of the Pioneer Elites actually, but once again no BD2.0 or ethernet. If those features are not important, then I would go with the Denon BD2500 or the Pioneer BDP05-FD

A lot of people on here will recommend players that offer features, not quality, which was a mistake that I made in the first post I left here for you. If you are truly interested in the best performance, then I would go with those. I am not sure of the price of the Sony ES5000, but I have heard good things so far. It may be too pricey though.

Although I understand your argument, I believe the decision should be left up to the individual. I don't play games and I don't really care what the critics have to say. Most of them are Microsoft worshipers or DUD lovers.

I have never played a game on any of these consoles. My only experiece with games are black jack and chess on a PC about 10 years ago. I still love my PS3. I may eventually get another machine. I am waiting to see what Denon and others have to offer in Profile 2.0.

The best right now is the BDP-05FD ($799), but the have a new model due out soon which I think will be amazing called the BDP-09FD. It will be priced at $2200, at retailers for $1999 most likely. You cant find it on their website yet, but you can google it and get some great information on it. Plus audioholics.com did a brief review of it that was lumped in with all of Pioneers highest end stuff.

I agree with your statements, it should be up to the buyer, but everyone just answer: PS3. I have one and I love it, but I have seen and used better BD players out there for the same price. I will upgrade when $$ allows me too, but if I didn't have a ps3 and I were buying one today, I would get a standalone. This is what pioneer has on their website

Good model, the elite has a few upgrades: gold plated connectors, different buttons on remote, but the biggest is better video processing!!!

Price really has nothing to do with quality. The reason Panasonic and Sony can offer a good player below $400 is because they are large multinational firms with huge markets and diverse products.

If the Panasonic DMP BD55 player was manufactured by a small high-end company, its price would be several thousand dollars. In fact, many small manufacturers buy bare bone players and parts from Sony/Panasonic, etc. and add value to them and sell them at very high prices. We have seen this in the CD and DVD markets.

The most recent issue of Home Theater Magazine (December 2008, Vol. 15, No.12, PP. 81-87, by Kris Deering) picked the Panasonic DMP-BD55 over the Pioneer BDP-51FD.

"Panasonic has made a great showing with its new lineup. The DMP-BD35 and DMP-BD55 deliver the best standalone values I have seen from the format yet. With Bonus View and BD-Live compatibility, great video processing, and full support of Blu-ray's advanced audio, its value is hard to beat. Pioneer tripped up a bit with its first showing. While it boasts solid audio support and good video performance, this player just doesn't get it done in the operation department. Hopefully, we'll see some improvement as Pioneer brings new players to the table."

The Pioneer Elite version (BDP-09FD) is considered to be superior, but the list price is $2,200.

Sorry, I didn't mean the elite version of BDP-51. Poor choice of words. I wanted to say the top-of-the-line Elite model.

The irony.

Only one person mentioned a PS3 in this thread. But how many anti PS3 posts?? You guys are preemptively putting down anyone who mentions or whispers the name PS3. Couldn't the reader make his or her own informed decision on the matter?

...if only you would spend more time posting insightful reasons to buy a stand alone instead of trying to persuade others not to buy a PS3...this would be a much more helpful site.

Bluray is a format. The PS3 plays Bluray's. When will you guys let it go? It's not a big deal.
