Which version of Lord of the Rings BD ? - Blu-ray Forum

It has been announced today that there will be next year a theatrical version of The Lord of the Rings headed for Bluray and later on the long extended version will come in some kind of super box set, probably around the time The Hobbit hits the big screens.

So which version do you plan to buy ?

My vote for the theatrical version is not entirely accurate as I will double dip on this and get the extended versions as well. Would have loved to have both available next year, but I can't wait to see this.

WB should have keep the extended editions a secret. Now that everyone knows about it, everybody will keep away from the theatrical editions and just wait.

I will be waiting for the extended editions.

Yes but for once that they have the honesty to let us know so that we can make an educated purchase, I shall certainly not lay the blame on them.

Since Universal's Blu-ray of Peter Jackson's King Kong will have both the theatrical and extended versions via seamless branching on the disc, it would have only been fair for New Line/Warner to do the same thing to the Lord of the Rings movies as well. But unfortunately, they didn't. So I will be waiting for the extended versions of the LOTR movies as well.

im waiting as the extended editions are sooo much better and add a lot to the story. i dont wanna watch the regular versions anymore, and i certainly dont wanna buy them

Both, and as I said in the LotR thread I and others will be enjoying the movies while waiting for the extended editions, and then I will pick up the extended when they hit.

My DVDs will have to suffice for now as I waited when they originally came out, because I had read about the extended versions even before LOTR was released. I'm pretty sure I can handle waiting again.

think i will rent the theatrical versions, or just borrow my friends who is a LOTR freak and will buy both...Will definately buy the extended box...

I agree 100%! Now, if only Warner would stop short-changing us and give us lossless audio on all releases I'd be a happy camper. New Line was doing great with lossless audio tracks until Warner stepped-in.

Seamless branching will change almost nothing as far as buying.
The bottom line is that the choice is a year or two of LotR on blu ray while waiting for the EE set or a year or two of waiting and wishing that I had them.
Let me say it again, it could be TWO YEARS between the release in 2009 and the EE release.

i already double dipped on the dvds and i think a rental (or 2

) will hold me over until the EE's come out. not to mention the dvd's dont look that bad upconverted

I hope that for the extended version they'll put each movie on one disc and one side. The extended edition on DVD was great but each movie was cut in two discs. It was annoying to me.
