I saw Sin City at the local Best Buy about a week ago and have been planning to buy it but I was hoping to see some opinions and or comments on its picture quality and sound quality. Anyone pick it up yet? Thanks.

It's very good, on both counts. Not perfect (it's a bit soft in spots, and I saw some edging), but a very good representation of the movie I remember from the cinema.
No extras though...that may be a problem for you, but I only really care about the movie.

I thought both PQ and AQ were stunning with Sin City, actually quite outstanding IMO. The no extras did not bother me like the above poster but it might be a deal breaker for some.

I'll be getting the BD for sure. As for extras? I'm fine with my Collector's Edition DVD that was released. It is one of maybe 3 DVDs that I'll hold onto in the case of a double dip.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. Based on your recommendations, I picked up Sin City today from Best Buy for only $19.99 Canadian. I am interested in From Dusk to Dawn as well, and wasn't aware that it was available. Is it in its proper ratio? I believe the standard definition version was not anamorphic.

Indeed it is, that was the best part for me, given the lack of even a anamorphic transfer on DVD. It has great PQ/SQ for it's age and budget. Great upgrade. |

A bit late, but I finally watched Sin City (at 12.99$ I couldn't wait for the US release)... Anyway...
PQ looks really great, AQ was really good in general (DTS-HD MA) but I though the dialog sounded had a bit... I don't really know how to describe it but it had kinda of a trebly sound in the background. Is it just me? It's the first time I notice that... I might be wrong. I might have to listen to the DVD to compare a bit. Anyway don't flame me for this I just wanted to know if anybody noticed something similar. Also the movie was really good as always! Edit: I watched the scene where Shlubb and Klump are guarding Roarke Jr's Jaguar E Typetbefore Bruce Willis knocks them out with a pipe on my DVD version and I noticed the same thing about the dialog of the two guys, I don't notice that with Bruce internal dialog, so I guess it's in the master track. I also found this from WSR: Narration is recorded rather well, with superb articulation, but dialogue often sounds unnatural and distorted. A tinny reverberation can be heard throughout the film when subjects talk. Perhaps the reverb is the ringing sound I hear. Finally after seeing revisiting the DVD, I can say that the improvements in the PQ is really noticeable for the blu-ray. Last edited by Johk; 12-02-2008 at 03:36 PM. |

Probably a stupid question, but I will ask anyway...
I was looking into ordering Sin City and From Dusk Til Dawn from Amazon's Canadian site. I live in the United States, and even after shipping I'm only paying $30 (US), is there a reason why these releases are so inexpensive? I know this sounds like a bad thing to "complain" about, but I'm just curious. |

Got it from amazon.ca back when and spent more than some others would but no regrets whatsoever. I really like this movie and the PQ and AQ weren't reference (how many BDs are?) but very very good. All told, 4.5 IMHO.
