So I sat down to re-watch The Brothers Grimm this weekend after/between playoff games etc. No, watching the movie wasn't the issue as I'm sure some of you will say - Here is the issue:
I've noticed this in some BD films and also some of my HD titles. Scenes that are CG look horrible. High def almost makes them seem even more animated, less real. They get extremely fuzzy & some have (how do I describe it)... a dark shadow under elements that are going to move (like the trees in Bros Grimm). I've also noticed an orb around some elements. I have Sharp Aquos TV & BD player... Any insight? Thx... |

Dude Im watchig Spiderman right now thinking the same thing. The cg looks super fake because it is so clear. I wonder how Star Wars will look.

It's actually the opposite of "so clear"... It's mucky... shadowy. Strange lighting. Only a few BDs I've seen do this. And there's also a strange "orb" that shows up around faces and such during animated scenes. Is this an issue with my Sharp BD player, or is this an actual transfer issue?

Perhaps its the motion enhancer. Try changing those settings if your TV offers it. Some people have had similar complaints when it is on or set to high.

According to my friend who worked on the VFX for Spidey 1 and 2, the final color timing is different from how the shots were originally spec'd, and that's hardly an uncommon occurance. Also "a 98% successful CG shot of something that could happen in real life is always going to be more "realistic" than a 98% of something unreal like webslinging, because your brain knows one can happen and one can not" Brother's Grimm was also fairly low budget for what it is

Wouldn't those effects look fake in the cinema too, then? I mean, the resolution you get there is quite a bit higher, yet I don't remember noticing any seriously fake looking CGI when I saw either Spidey or Brothers Grimm at the movies...
