There's also a great thread over at AVS regarding the sub, shipping, etc. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1088734

There are currently two ways to get this sub- either through eBay or Amazon. Both are the same sellers/importers and the same basic price- $229 + 29 shipping. You may want to contact the company directly as they may be able to waive shipping costs or give you a coupon to bring down the price a bit.

Below are my initial thoughts on receiving the sub on the 15th.

Quote:
Got my Premier Acoustics PA-120 today. Let it return to room temperature from sitting out on the porch all day and then fired it up. Ran it for a bit, then ran Audyssey as I didn't like how it sounded by default. Getting it dialed in now- watched Gone in 60 Seconds, and Eleanor just roared throughout the room. Haven't had much chance to watch anything else due to the fact that my family is in bed.

Thus far, it seems like a very solid sub. I'll post pics soon, but the build quality is good. Piano black finish on top is very nice, and the grille snaps in nicely (though the tabs are plastic). One complaint I have is that the power cord is too blasted short- right now I have it plugged into the wall instead of my power conditioner. I'll have to look into options there or just put up with it.

Sound-wise, it meshes well with my setup with the crossovers set at 80hz. I can tell a large difference from my previous sub, as expected. I haven't run test tones or anything like that (and probably won't unless there's a problem) but overall am pretty happy with the purchase.

For $229 shipped, I feel it's definitely a strong performer in the budget category. It looks nice, is very solid, and seems to perform well thus far. I'll update as I have more to say, but wanted to get some information out there for people that are looking for something that works well on a budget.

Uploading some pics now courtesy of Pakow over at AVS. Hopefully he won't mind as I have rehosted them elsewhere to conserve his bandwidth. He actually took apart his new PA-120 to get an idea of the interior. Again, for a budget sub I think this is pretty decent. Internal bracing, batting and decently-thick MDF:

Thing weighs 56lbs according to one member on AVS, and guesstimating I'd agree- it's definitely more than a salt bag! I'll update later with some of my own pics with it in my current setup. Enjoy and feel free to post your thoughts on the sub since I'm by no means an expert.

Ok, some background on the PA-120 subwoofer. This sub, along with the Bic H-100 and VK12 are from different companies but apparently are manufactured in the same facility. It's been stated by the rep that sells these that he'd rate the PA-120 just behind the VK12 in terms of performance. With it being approximately $100 cheaper, it's definitely worth a look as a budget performer.

One thing that I typically hate is that people gush over their new purchases and find no fault in them. I want to think that I can objectively talk about this sub. With that in mind, here's a more extended review:

Now, that I've had the sub for a few days, I've watched Max Payne, Gone in 60 Seconds, Live Free or Die Hard, King Kong, and clips of Transformers. I have to say that it really does a great job with bass-heavy scenes. Almost all of Max Payne is mixed with the low end in mind, and it really did bring a smile to my face.

The build as you can see above is very solid. It's approximately 1" MDF along the woofer with 3/4" double-braced and glued elsewhere. The build is very strong and looks very good. The piano black is a nice little accent to an understated, but attractive subwoofer. I have had no hum whatsoever in a system that previously gave me a little bit with my old sub.

There are a couple of things that I have found that I don't like about the subwoofer, however. The biggest one to me is the power cable. You can't swap it out without some major modification, and it's not very long. I can't reach my power conditioner without an extension cable (one on the way from Monoprice now). The other thing I don't like, is the grill. While it looks very attractive, there is no bracing on the center- thus a child or dog could feasibly damage the woofer if they hit it hard enough.

With this in mind, though- getting a sub that I feel performs this well for $239 shipped feels like a steal to me. It's a great performer that may not be as good as the big boys, but the price to performance ratio makes this one easy for me to recommend. If you're tight on a budget or simply feel that the other subs are too high-priced, this is a great move.

I like the finish on it. How does it handle test tones?
My recommended setup for Home Theater Virgins:

Speakers: Polk Monitor 50's, Polk Monitor 40's, Polk CS2 Center, and eD subwoofer or
HTIB: Polk 5.1 system and
Receiver: Non-Network Onkyo TX-SR608 or Onkyo HT-RC180 Network Receiver

Haven't run any personally myself, but folks that got theirs in the same batch as mine over at AVS have, and it hits 23hz before falling off a cliff. So, their claim of 24hz is pretty fair.

I'll have to do it with mine just out of curiosity at some point. Then again, maybe ignorance is bliss.

Oh. I just meant by ear. 24hz isn't bad for the money.

"For the money" has pretty much been my whole buying strategy. Buying Polk Monitors as they started to really drop in price, buying an older Philips that gets great reviews for what it is over at AVS, buying the 605 when the 606 was out, buying the APC HT10 as it was closing out, and now this. I'm all about performance on a budget. If I had unlimited budget, sure I'd own a Kuro, an SVS, Pio Elite receiver, and some high-end B&W's... but I don't.

If you had an unlimited budget, you'd be way beyond that. I'm the same way too. Everything I have bought has been through an awesome deal (discount).

Awesome. Take some pics and update the thread! I feel so alone in here... alone, and cold...

Seriously though, I really love this sub. I'm actually completely happy with all of my HT, which is a first in a long time. I've been constantly looking towards that next big investment, and I'm done, for the time being.

Well, this sub handled the mighty "SKIDOOSH!" scene in Kung Fu Panda. I figure it can handle just about any movie thrown at it at this point. It was so beautiful I almost teared up!

...yeah, they're slow. Apparently the company sometimes puts them up for sale even though they've not arrived from the factory sometimes.

In my opinion though, it's a heck of a sub and well worth the wait for the pirce.

Thanks for comin' over here and posting. It looks very slick in your HT.

I watched "The Punisher: War Zone" last night and the sub really had a workout. Sounded great.

Any certain recommended settings for this sub? I have the crossover all the way up, the phase at 0, volume around 7 or 8, all of my speakers and LFE set at 80hz, and my sub volume setting at -3.
