Other than the Ralphie's teacher, it's a completely different cast. But it is every bit as good of a cast as ACS. I wish they would release it as a double pack on BD.
Loved that movie! I totally agree - the cast was just as good. I especially thought the whole gravy boat thing was hilarious. I really enjoyed it - thought it was a pretty good follow up.

I'm working my way through the Janus Essential Art House Collection and really, really enjoyed A Brief Encounter. I know that its not all that lesser known, but feel it may get overshadowed by Lean's other fantastic films.

Another title from that collection so far that I really enjoyed is Ballad of a Soldier. Having taken a Russian film history class I really enjoyed to see the pro-Stalin vibe at the beginning of the film, but then a very drastic change toward the end. Very good.

My lesser-known favorites:

Elephant (by Gus Van Sant) - a school-shooting drama with hypnotic cinematography

Ghost World (by Terry Zwigoff) - a teenage dark-comedy starring Scarlett Johansson, Thora Birch, and Steve Buscemi

Memories of Murder (by Joon-Ho Bong) - a serial killer movie based on real events

Stranger Than Fiction (by Marc Forster) - Will Ferrell is a character in a struggling author's (Emma Thompson) story

Three... Extremes (by Fruit Chan, Takashi Miike, and Chan-wook Park) - an eerie and surreal Asian horror anthology

... and seemingly the most under-watched, under-rated film of 2010, Mother, also by Joon-Ho Bong.

As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me

I haven't watched a lot of foreign films but this one (German) was great. May have been my favorite film I watched last year.

For those who love anthologies like Pulp Fiction and Go, I recommend 11:14, starring Hilary Swank, Partick Swayze, Rachel Leigh Cook, Jason Segel, and Ben Foster.

Yep. I love Ghost World. I think I recommended it some pages back. Great movie.
When I was born, the world was a far simpler place. It was all just cops and robbers.

Twin Town

Quote:
Twin Town opens with wide sweeping shots of seaside Swansea; to be the place of action for the next one and a half hours. The serene setting with miles upon miles of old semi-detached housing is suddenly cleaved apart by two young lads tearing through the neighbourhood in a two tone BMW 525. Julian and Jeremy are in deep trouble. Their dysfunctional family scrapes together a living from their dole money and odd-jobs offered to their father. The boys have long since turned to drug abuse and car theft leading a happy-go-lucky life in downtown no-hoper city. In due course the plot thickens as the boys are out for revenge against wealthy club owner Bryn who is not particularly helpful in providing compensation when their father is hit by an accident when working on his premises. The boys are fairly imaginative when it comes to planning their strike, culminating in scenes which all dog-haters and karaoke loathers will love.
Is one of those movies I love but don't really know why

I would have to go with My Boy Jack starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter). I love this movie cause it's such a good story and seeing him in anything other than HP.

I was surprised by how much I liked Ghost World. I wasn't expecting it to be that good. Truly one of the most underrated and under-seen movies of the 2000's. I really hope they release it on blu someday.

Speaking of surprisingly good movies, I also recommend With A Friend Like Harry, a Hitchcockian black-comedy featuring yet another memorable performance by Sergi Lopez (Capt. Vidal from Pan's Labyrinth) as the title character.

Big +1. Apparently, Memories of Murder is one of the most popular and highest grossing movies of South Korea. Mother, being by the same director, gets the recognition it deserves in its home country. A very intense and emotionally draining film, and probably the best foreign film of 2009. The main actress's performance is outstanding. Here is its official thread.

I'll definitely check this out. I recommend Kwaidan and Mario Bava's Black Sabbath
[Show spoiler](with Michele Mercier ).

Yeah, it's odd that it isn't as popular outside of South Korea.

The mother was pretty damn good and was my front-runner for Best Actress of the year. But then I saw Portman in Black Swan. She deserves to be nominated though. Solid performance.

I'm confused. Is Mother in the running for 2010 awards? I was always under the impression it was a 2009 film.

Definitely would like to hear your feedback for Kwaidan in particular. Fantastic movie. Watch Dreams too if you haven't seen it. Both films set a masterful, slow-paced surreal mood.
