Blu-ray Player Profiles? - Blu-ray Forum

Someone please explain BD player profiles to me. Is it basically like an O.S? or Hardware?

I have the Sharp Aquos BD-HP20 player with Profile: 1.0. I'm unable to access Universal's U-control features as it says it needs profile 1.1.

Can profiles be upgraded thru firmware updates?

And on that note - do other studios have anything similar to U-Control? What all can be accessed thru the "red" button? Bookmarks and such work fine.

So ultimately, other then playing the feature film... What good is 1.0?

What more do you really need?

For your player specifically, I believe it lacks a second processor to decode the pip track for 1.1 enabled Blus. In this case it may not be able to upgrade to 1.1 through firmware updates.

Right on... But when you pay $25 for a disc that has a significant amount of features, and you're limited due to your "profile", then you're really not getting the full experience of the disc... IF you're into that sort of thing.

and most extras. 1.1 is bonus view which is basically video commentary during the movie in a PiP

2.0 is extras that where never included but added on line

Nearly 100% of people who bought 1.0 players are early adopters and were fully aware of this when buying the player.

When the BD-P1000 first came out it was around $1,000, people dont buy that on a whim.
