At one point I had over 2000 DVDs (been selling them off since blu-ray) and I only owned about 20 Criterion DVDs. Since Criterion started releasing blu-rays, I have collected and bought all of them and been very satisfied and only want more and more. I have actually been buying Criterion DVDs to satisify this hunger, has this happened to anyone else? Or does everyone on this thread already have large Criterion Collections? Just curious

Actually The 400 Blows was OOP for years. Criterion just brought it back about, I think, 2 years ago.

You should try to find the money to pick this up while it's in your Gold Box. Beta's right, the transfer on this is just incredible! I have the re-release DVD from 2 years ago and it even pales in comparison.
Plus, and I don't know how they do it, Criterion's Uncompressed PCM Mono soundtracks are just amazing. Seriously, they are incredible!

And it's really, really, really addicting. So much so that I've even gone back and found some OOP Criterion DVDs for pretty cheap. I got Silence of the Lambs, RoboCop and Time Bandits for about $40 from different vendors on Amazon. All brand new, factory sealed.

I also ordered The Samurai Trilogy and the Great Adaptations boxset from DVD Pacific during their sale a few weeks ago.

Now I'm just hoping Criterion doesn't go and announce any of those DVDs I just bought on Blu-ray...

(I've already been corrected: Time Bandits is not OOP.)

Well.... I don't buy the DVDs now.... just rent.... but my Criterion DVD collection is in the neighborhood of "350" or so.

I got a late start... and never caught up.... So I'm trying to not let that happen with the Blu-rays.... although I got a late start, It wasn't very late, so I caught up already

EDIT:

Hmm the two new releases aren't up on Amazon yet

The sad thing is the Blu Collection will always been incomplete. So its really not a collection. Just think of all the movies OOP that they lost the rights too.....I was going to collect them all but then decided just to get the ones I like. No sense in buying them all to have 20 discs missing. Now had they changed the numbering system for the blues that would be different.

I had over 500 DVDs (and 500 Laserdiscs) and started selling them off too... but the only ones I keep (and buy!) seem to be the Criterions. Thing is, even if I'm not interested in the films beforehand and blind buy, they end up being pretty great regardless (i.e. Brute Force). It's better than film school

The "Collection" is complete with DVD/LD/BD I don't collect for the number on the Spine, I collect for the quality of the "Library" they provide

either way... I guess I should say I'm "Collecting" the entire "Criterion" offering on Blu-ray..... "Criterion Collection" is more of a reference to what they've put out over the years..... "Criterion" being the studio releasing them, and that's what I'm more concerned with.... if half of their offering was "Co-ventures" with other studios (Like the case of Benjamin Button with Paramount) Then I'd likely only collect the ones they released exclusively.... because it seems (in this case, with the "Case" and artwork) that Criterion doesn't get absolute say.... fortunately the extras, and technical merits of this release were fantastic.... and Criterion doesn't usually partner up with other studios.... so I'll buy now, and figure it out later

Criterion isn't a studio.

And I've given up being a completist in anything. No sense spending money on something I won't watch just to say I've got them all.

Wow, Amazon is really slow with these pre-orders. I noticed it last month too. With all the money they make, they really don't have an excuse. They should have been up by today.

yeah.... bummed about the lack of the two pre-orders

See.... I have an excuse for being behind now

I just got my Sirius Boom-Box thing ordered though.... so saving the $50 for a little longer isn't a bad thing (I know they don't charge you until they ship!)

Anyways...

Yeah, Benny Button is one heck of a film.......I can understand why Criterion would agree to the "joint release" on it.... It's tough to say if it'll hold the test of time though..... AQ/PQ/Extras are top notch though (STILL trying to finish the extras on this one!!!)

New tweak on Amazon's "Open and recently placed orders" page:

Now includes links to the product purchased! I was always baffled as to why they never did that before.

Why that relates to this thread: I can see Repulsion, Last Year at Marienbad, For All Mankind and The Seventh Seal on said page! I cannot, however, see Playtime or Kagemusha yet.

Also, YEAH, CRITERION! I haven't even started the special features on Button yet. Too much other stuff to watch.

I'm thinking Amazon should have to take $1 off pre-order price each day they are late for posting from the day Criterion announced the 2 new blu-rays.

There are some people on the Criterion forums who seem to have everything but in a way, I wish I bought more earlier on. Back then I was quite particular on which titles I wanted to get but now, having watched and owned the Criterion titles, there hasn't been really a title which I have not enjoyed.

I've enjoyed everything so far and now it makes me think of how many brilliant films that I have passed up over the years.

I am at the opposite end of you on this, certain movies I just will not want to watch them multiple times, I only want certain Criterion movies, unfortunatly they cancel Ran

I understand and in many ways, I wish I had that mentality. Rarely do I watch a film multiple times but there are a few. But as for wanting the whole Criterion (or wishing), that is more completist behavior. And it extends past my passion for BD's.

I like to buy, not rent and most recently my brother and a few friends are now all into Netflix streaming and are trying to convert my mentality of why own, when you can just spend a cheap monthly payment and watch it via streaming.

Well as of now, you have a very easy and legit response: they are nowhere near to having everything available streaming, and it's certainly not the quality of Blu Ray.
