A music server would probably be the last thing on my list, just thought that one was a cool product.

Listened to Death Magnetic yet? If so what do you think?

Unfortunately the SQ is kind of low on that disc but I really like a few of the songs.

Listening to Gish right now myself.

Saw this in my internet travels,
http://shop.grantfidelity.com/Grant-...Converter.html

Looks interesting but I'm not sure what to make of Grant Fidelity, haven't really heard anything about they're products before.

I have read about grant fidelity in stereophile. They seem to be pretty legit.

check out this one I found skimming thru the recent Music Direct catelog

http://www.musicdirect.com/p-59620-j...-tube-dac.aspx

Looks like a great option for a tube DAC.

I wonder which is supposed to be the better chip, Cirrus Logic or the Burr Brown. My Marantz cdp has Cirrus Logic and the Integra has Burr Brown does it not?

I also wonder if they would perform as well as a standard solid state ( if that's what you call them ) dac. Are you paying a bit more for a slightly inferior dac to get the tubes? Or does adding the tubes really increase the cost much? Just throwing out some thoughts.

These dac's are interesting, never thought of a tube dac before. I'll have to do some more reading about them.

I think it comes down to the implementation of the circuitry around the DACs.

Most of the main DACs you see now a days are rated at 113db and above. If each DAC was tested at 85db reference levels, I wonder how differently they would perform?

Which songs did you like on Death Magnetic?

My favorites are,

The Day That Never Comes
All Nightmare Long
Cyanide

The 45rpm vinyl sounds much better than the cd, it's not nearly as compressed and has greater dynamics. It's not loud 100% of the time like the cd. I bought Beyond Magnetic the other day, it has four songs that were never released on the album. It's not bad but most of the album cuts are better.

Ok you lost me there, are those ratings the channel separation? I'm still new to the whole Dac thing.

Integra does use a burr-brown DAC. I don't know what level of a BB DAC the integra uses tho. If Arcam and other high end companies are using BB DACs Im sure they are concerned with every bit of detail. I think Integra wants a high level of detail, but isn't striving to get every drop.

I know that the IT Burr Brown PCM 1796 DAC is considered a very good DAC, Im sure the 1793 is very close to the 1796. Wolfson, Cirrus Logic, ESS, Burr Brown and theres another one, Analog something, are the major DAC companies. Kal Rubinson, from Stereophile went on AVS and said that all dacs are very close to each other in terms of performance, its how they construct the analog boards that elevates the overall performance. The Analog something DAC is supposed to be the best of the best, its what they really high end products use apparently.

The Tube DAC looks awesome. I am thinking that maybe some time down the line of grabbing that one. I know the Oppo 93 has a Cirrus Logic DAC. Oppo says its a pretty good one that is found in many higher end CDPs and DACs. We'll see.

There were several, I think #3, #7, #8 were the ones, There were some great songs with the double bass and it sounded great. Im glad they got back to more of that speed metal sound.

Analog Devices is what you are thinking about.

And the circuitry I was referring to was the analog boards that Kal talks about. That is why is really should come down to sound and not what DAC is really inside. There are also SPDIF encoder and decoders that come into play. How the Master clock is implemented in the SOURCE device. there are also digital filters involved. How is that implemented and is the code fully supported?

Thats it, Analog Devices.

thanks for the break down, I kinda knew a little of that, but not as much as you just broke down... didn't want to sound uninformed either.

Nada. Starting to get tired, I have the kids all day as my wife is working tomorrow. Its supposed to rain here, so that means they'll be inside all day.... another bonus! Thinking it might be time to turn in. Im also laughing at someone who called my Excite speakes analytical on AVS. If they think the Excites are analytical, then they better not go any further up the Dyn line, cause they just get more detailed and more neutral, and he'll think they are very analytical.
