Default New release of Terminator not so new

Terminator Gets New Slip-Cover; No New Extras
Posted March 30, 2009 09:57 AM by Josh Dreuth
In an early announcement to retailers, MGM Home Entertainment in conjunction with 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has revealed that they will bring 'The Terminator (Lenticular Cover)' to Blu-ray on May 12th, day-and-date with the DVD re-issue and one week before Lionsgate's new 'Terminator 2: Judgment Day (Skynet Edition)' Blu-ray.

According to our good friend Bill Hunt at The Digital Bits, MGM is simply re-issuing the existing disc with a new lenticular cover, so nothing new. The next obvious question becomes, when will be see a proper release for 'Terminator 3'? Japan may have already provided a hint, with Warner Home Video releasing a Dolby TrueHD version of the release there on June 5th. Hopefully we'll hear of a US release soon.
So much for replacing the one I have, oh well.

I plan on doing so after getting the skynet edition, just because I only have the terminator series on DVD and would like to upgrade to blu.

Terminator, The Lenticular Blu-ray (May 12th)

I say. Bleh. Someone said it looked more like Ghost Rider than Terminator... too true.

MGM deserves a punch in the face for this.

My mission is to protect you.
Yeah? Who sent you?
You did. Thirty-five years from now, you re-programmed me to be your protector here, in this time.
Oh, this is deep... ~

question is..the T1 movie has been pretty cheap since it was released. i wonder if the new packaging will be reason for a price hike..

I'm probably going to buy it since I sold my previous copy awhile back. It does look like Ghost Rider but I think it looks better (IMO).

Is this the lamest (most lame?) double-dip for blu-ray so far? Same exact disc & transfer, only a new case? Gadzukes....

The first Terminator release wasn't terrible, especially considering it came out in 2006. While many harshly critique the transfer, in all honesty The Terminator is a rough-looking film and most likely can't look much better. I will be curious to see what Lowry does, as they'll almost definitely be able to make it look a little better, but it's not like the first release was a botched job. A legitimate complaint with the first disc, however, was the lack of the original mono soundtrack, as some of the re-done effects were pretty bad.

The full restoration isn't complete yet, so I'm glad they didn't rush it. This is just a new slipcover to tie into the T4 movie release, just like Paramount put all those Academy Award slipcovers on their titles to tie into the hype of the most recent Oscars. I really don't see this as a "double-dip" as there's no reason for any owners of the previous disc to buy it - it's basically just a new SKU in the system so it'll show up in the "New Release" section and maybe attract the attention of people who don't already own it. The actual restored disc will come out when it is ready, and then we can judge whether Fox/MGM have created a valid double-dip.

Considering the previous disc was by Sony, this new Fox one is going to have the trailers, transfer and audio options from Sony?

the disc is going to be the exact same as the one that is out now (see the bluray review HERE for the specs). the only thing different is the cover.
