http://stores.channeladvisor.com/the...ers/Subwoofers, $88.88 + Free Shipping

I recently bought an 8" and a 12" Acoustic Audio subwoofers from Deep Discount for a total cost of $287.76 + Free Shipping. I bought the 12" sub for my sister and the 8" sub for my daughter. They had asked me to build them one. After doing some research, I realized that it would be a lot more costly and time consuming to build a subwoofer. I had very low expectations and had every intention to replace the drivers and upgrade these subs.

They arrived after 5 days with UPS ground. I opened the 8" sub box first and discovered the cutest little subwoofer that I had ever seen. I examined it very carefully and it looked like a very high quality and well-made sub. It is a ported and down-firing sub. I moved it to my home theater room, disconnected all the other subs and hooked up the little monster. After playing some test tones for half an hour, I decided to play a few Blu-ray movies. It shocked the hell out of me. The little monster was capable of outputting decent bass. I turned the volume up on the back of the sub, and it continued to play loud bass without distorting. For $88.88, this is a great buy. It is ideal for a small office or bedroom. Buy four of them and your HT room will be converted to a high-end cinema.

Acoustic Audio HD-SUB12, 12" Powered Subwoofer, $198.88 + Free Shipping

Next, I opened the 12" sub box. My jaw dropped when I discovered the most beatiful cherry-colored cabinet. Immediately, I realized that this definitely has a high WAF appeal. It has the most gorgeous white driver and a high-end looking amplifier.

For a few minutes, I looked at the sub and appreciated its beauty. Can it perform as well as it looks? I took it to the home theater room, disconnected all other subwoofers and connected the new sub. I am not exaggerating. This thing can sound loud without distortion. I turned it up a little to test its tolerance. It scared me as I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Immediately, I decided that my sister can wait. This sub stays right here where it belongs. I ordered another one for her. I am so impressed with this new sub that I am willing to buy 4 of these for less than $800 and put each at the corner or the middle of each wall.

APPEARANCE

FREQUENCY RESPONSE

I decided to measure the frequency response of the HD-Sub 12 subwoofer. Unfortunately, a home theater room is not the best place for this type of measurements. The frequency response changes quite a bit in different locations in the room. I am also aware that the Audyssey calibration program has tweaked the subwoofer's frequency, but I am not trying to win the Nobel prize. Who wants to live in an anechoic chamber?

I took a few measurements and finally decided to take the readings about 3 ft (≈ 1 meter) directly in front of the subwoofer.

I turned the volume on the back of the subwoofer to the middle (50% point) and turned the subwoofer’s gain in the receiver to zero. The receiver's volume was intentionally set high in the 90dB range so that the measurements are calculated more accurately in case of weak sound output at some frequencies. All the other speakers and subwoofers in the room were turned off.

I played Rives Audio’s Test CD-2 test tones and measured the levels of the sound outputs at different frequencies with my Radio Shack Digital SPL Meter. At 25 Hz, the whole room, including all the furniture started vibrating like a real earthquake. I must have hit the room resonance point.

I recorded the SPL numbers and then plotted SPL in dB’s versus frequency in Hertz using Microsoft Excel. The following graph demonstrates the results.

The subwoofer performs very well in the low and middle frequencies. After this point, the sound output begins to drop significantly. The reason is because the maximum level on the crossover network on the back of the subwoofer is set at 130Hz.

CONSTRUCTION

I opened my Acoustic Audio HD-Sub 12 subwoofer.

There is nothing special inside the subwoofer. Like most other subwoofers, the cabinet is made of 3/4" MDF wood with a layer of poly-fill on the inside walls. After I examined it thoroughly, I added some more poly-fill to it.

Here is a picture of the 12" driver. The wires are soldered for added security so that they don't come loose.

This is a picture of the amplifier. Unfortunately or I should say fortunately, it is completely taped up and you cannot see anything.

This is the high Definition series sub from Acoustic Audio. Deep Discount sells other 8", 10", 12", and 15" Acoustic Audio subwoofers that are cheaper.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
  • The more you play this subwoofer, the better this sub (like all others) will sound.
  • As you can see under specifications, the sensitivty of this subwoofer is high (99db @ 1 watt/1 meter) and the amplifier is too strong. The subwoofer can be extremely loud. It is best to keep the gain control (volume dial) on the subwoofer's amplifier around the midpoint. In my home theater room, I set it to less than the midpoint.
  • Do not forget that placement in the room plays an important role.

REVIEWS OF OTHER ACOUSTIC AUDIO SUBWOOFERS

The following review of Acoustic Audio HD-SUB10 is done by JJxiv1215:

http://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=415
http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread....07#post1841007

REPLACING THE DRIVER OF THE HD-SUB12 SUBWOOFER

As you can see in the picture above, the driver of the HD-SUB12 is quite attractive. I decided to do some experiments. I ordered the e3.12 from Elemental Designs for $125 + Free Shipping. This driver is used in the ED A2-300 subwoofers.

I replaced the original driver of the HD-SUB12 with the ED driver. When I took the AA driver out, I realized that there were several problems. Read the details in Post #399 of DIY Subwoofer/Speaker Building, Repairing, & Upgrading. This is a picture of the sub with the new driver.

I ran the Rives Audio test tones through the modified sub. To my surprise, it hardly produced any sound at 20Hz. My SPL meter registered 68dB. At 25Hz, the sound was louder around 87dB and they were louder after that. These are the overall responses at 1 meter (3.3ft) in my room:

20Hz, 68dB
25Hz, 87dB
31.5Hz, 97dB
40Hz, 97dB
50Hz, 88dB
63Hz, 92dB
80Hz, 94dB
100Hz, 92dB
125Hz, 92dB

This is the plot of SPL versus frequency.

You should not look at the absolute numbers in the above diagrams, but rather at the relative numbers. I intentionally drove the new ED driver a little lower because I was afraid of doing damage to something new and unfamiliar. Overall, I liked the performance of the new driver and am happy with it, but the original Acoustic Audio driver played much louder at 20Hz.

ADDITIONAL MEASUREMENTS

Last night (August 3, 2009), I ran test tones again to measure the output of the HD-SUB12 subwoofer. I took the measurements about 4 feet away and changed the level on the back of the sub and the receiver's volume. The gain for the sub in the receiver was held constant at zero.

Case 1. Sub level: 50%, Receiver Gain: 0, Receiver Volume: -15dB

20Hz, 74dB
25Hz, 92dB
31.5HZ, 99dB
40Hz, 98dB
50Hz, 92dB
63Hz, 92dB
80Hz, 97dB
100Hz, 86dB
125Hz, 81dB

This is the graph:

Case 2. Sub level: 75%, Receiver Gain: 0, Receiver Volume: -15dB

20Hz, 80dB
25Hz, 98dB
31.5HZ, 100dB
40Hz, 105dB
50Hz, 98dB
63Hz, 98dB
80Hz, 104dB
100Hz, 94dB
125Hz, 87dB

This is the graph:

Case 3. Sub level: 50%, Receiver Gain: 0, Receiver Volume: 0dB

20Hz, 94dB
25Hz, 101dB
31.5HZ, 101dB
40Hz, 108dB
50Hz, 105dB
63Hz, 104dB
80Hz, 105dB
100Hz, 96dB
125Hz, 92dB

This is the graph:

thank very much I will be going to that site and ordering the HD sub 10-maybe the 12 will see what happens. So I guess these are not just generic subs after all. Thank you for starting up this thread.

Buy the 12" sub. The difference in price is small and you will be happier in the long run. If you don't like boring black cabinet, buy cherry or maple.

They don't mean anything. They just use these terms for marketing purposes. Some people may interpret Audiophile Series for music lovers and High Definition Series for movies. However, I don't believe that.

It looks like the HD series are front firing, a bit more expensive, and they come in three colors. The Audiophile Series are slightly cheaper, down-firing, and the cabinets are black only.

I ran test tones through it starting with 20Hz. It had no difficulty playing them. Even when I increased the volume, it handled them with ease. I also played a few Blu-ray movies and SACD music at loud volume. It handled everything I threw at it.

I have three other subwoofers in my home theater room. Two of them are 12" Hsu vintage subwoofers that I had upgraded with enhanced drivers. The other one is an old 15" DBX subwoofer that I rebuilt with a very powerful driver. All three are passive. I use the Cinepro amplifier to send 700 watts into each one of the modified Hsu subwoofers. The 15" subwoofer is powered by a 1,500 watt powerful Carver amplifier. In addition, my two Definitive Technology speakers have 15" powered subwoofers inside (300 watts RMS each). I can only tell you that this new subwoofer has not been outclassed yet.

I bought this subwoofer with very low expection for my sister. I had originally intended to replace the driver with a high-end aluminum driver. As I stated earlier, it looked so beautiful and performed so well that I decided to keep it and order another one for my sister. I don't think I will be changing the driver in the immediate future. I may eventually move it to my two-channel room for 2.1 playback. The cherry finish matches my Polk vintage speakers perfectly. I have a 12" black DIY subwoofer there. It works great, but doesn't match the Polk speakers.

EDIT: I just ran the pink noise from the receiver through it and measured the output with an SPL meter. When I turned the volume knob on the back of the subwoofer to the three-quarter point, the SPL meter hit 110 db about a foot away. The subwoofer showed no sign of stress or distortion. I turned it off after this. I didn't want to take a chance and go all the way to the maximum level. As far as I am concerned, the subwoofer passed with an A.

do u think the 8" sub would outperform my polk psw12 sub?

my HT is in my room so the space is limited, if this sub would do better, it would be great to know since my sub takes up so much darn space!

thanks for your reviews on these.

im still pretty new to HT audio stuff so i would appreciate your experienced input.

here are the specs
Subwoofer 1 - 12" Diameter (30.48cm)
Dynamic Balance Polymer Composite cone
Electrical
Overall Frequency Response 26Hz - 200Hz
Lower -3dB Limit 33Hz
Upper -3dB Limit 160Hz
Crossover Variable 60Hz - 160Hz
Inputs Speaker level, line level & unfiltered LFE
Outputs Speaker level
Dimensions
Cabinet Size 16-3/8" H x 16" W x 17-5/8" D
(41.59cm H x 40.64cm W x 44.77cm D)
Enclosure Type Vented via front panel flared port
Power Output 100 watts Continuous Average Output
Dynamic Power Output 260 watts
Available in 220V? Yes

and a linky
http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/specs/recent/psw12/

the numbers of AA PSW-8 already says it hits higher and lower frequences and has at least 50 more watts.

are front firing subs better then down firing?

in a head to head battle do u think the AA psw-8 would outperform the polk psw12( i know polk isnt known for their subs)

The 8" sub is too small. For its size and price, it performs well and may compete well against a larger sub. I haven't done any direct comparison, but I am not sure it can outperform a 12" sub. A better alternative is use two or more 8" subs. While many people believe that the reason for multiple subs is louder and more bass sound, the main reason is because multiple subs in a room perform better and create a much larger sweet spot. The bass sound will be more even across the room. You can hide two smaller subwoofers better than a larger one.

No, there are no major advantages between down firing and front firing subs. Down-firing subs are easier and cheaper to make. They don't need a grille. They can also be made to look like a coffee table. Many people put an area rug under a down-firing sub. A rug can absorb some of the port noise and distortion coming out of a poorly designed subwoofer.

Orientation of the driver is not very important. The placement in the room makes a lot of difference. Some locations in a home theater room create great bass and other locations create very poor bass sound. The shape and dimensuions of the room are the most important factors.

Boy did you really throw a wrench into my decision process. I was pretty much set on taking advantage of the sale at Outlaw and getting the LFM-1 Compact. But now I'm tempted to get two of the Acoustic Audio 12" subs.

I need a down firing sub due to cats potentially using the grill as a scratching post or damaging the cone.

But now I can't seem to see a big difference in the PSW or RW accept for 1 year warranty difference. The only other thing that bothers me is there is no phase control. Do you have any thoughts ? Have you thought about opening up either of the subs to look at build quality.

As of now I'm using the TSC ASW-10 but would like more output and extension. I was going to get another ASW for more output and sacrifice some extension but figured one higher quality sub is better than two average subs.

Man I hate decisions like this. But I'm still giving the slight edge to the Outlaw due to the proven track record of the company and the fact it's designed by Dr. HSU.

The only disadvantage that I can see with these is the fact that neither of them appear to have an "auto-on" feature- it's either on or off. Same with the phase. Can you confirm? *edit* Oh, and how long is the power cord? One thing I don't like about my PA-120 is the cord is a bit short and isn't removable so I had to get an extension at Monoprice.

Also, I wanna see pics of the 12" with the grill on. Looks like a nice sub! Sounds like these can be added to the mix of competitively-priced subs along with the Bic H-100 and the PA-120!

I prefer two subs to one. Two subs give you more flexibility in placement and will create a more even bass across the room. You will definitely get a larger sweet spot. Acoustic Audio also sells 15" subwoofers.

If you have pets or children, you should definitely get a down-firing subwoofer. Children are worse than pets. They do a pretty good job of damaging woofers. I believe they are paid by woofer manufacturers.

The warranty is not an issue for me. I am a reckless tweaker. Before the warranty expires, I may change the driver, amplifier, and the works.

As far as phase control is concerned, neither of the subs have them. Most surveys show that the majority of people with subwoofers do not understand what phase control does and leave it at zero. Phase control may become important if you have large towers or a second sub in the room. That does not necessarily mean that the phase control will accomplish much. In most cases, all you really have to do is switch the positive and negative speaker wires on a speaker to make it out-of-phase (when one woofer pushes out, the other pushes in). In the case of passive subwoofers, it is very easy. For powered subwoofers, you need to remove the amplifier and switch the wires internally. That is normally a 10 minute job.

I have 4 external subwoofers in my home theater room. My two front speakers also have two 15" powered subwoofers. That makes it 6 large subwoofers in the room. I have tweaked them to death. I have reached the conclusion that it is best to leave the phase settings on zero for all of them.

Quote:

I no longer have access to the 8" sub. My daughter took it away. As far as the 12" sub is concerned, I may eventually do that. Right now, I have to decide between opening a sub or signing divorce papers.

I have been a fan of Dr. Hsu from early 1990s. I met him about 11 years ago and spent several hours with him at their headquarters in Anaheim, CA. I bought two of their top-of-the-line subwoofers in 1998. Recently, I upgraded both of them.

That is incorrect. The PSW-8 model does not have auto-on feature. The HD-Sub 12 model does. See the picture below:

The power cord is about 5 ft long. It is not removable.

I added two pictures of the 12" sub with the grille on to post #3.

I am not familiar with the logitech, but the RW 10" has 200 watts RMS power and can thump pretty hard. The peak power is 400 watts.
