United Kingdom "Blue Thunder" (1983)

Just ordered "Blue Thunder" (1983) at £8.99 seems like reasonable bargain that should be here within the next few days.

I own the first edition region 2 DVD that has cracking six-track Dolby stereo digital mix and I hope the Bluray hasn’t had any silly re-mixes like, folding centre phantom from the stereo fronts onto the discrete centre channel, along with fake split-stereo surrounds, now then!

Blue Thunder was exclusively released UK (25th August 1983) in-70mm six-rack Dolby stereo with monaural surrounds (Dolby format 42) so I should expect the same treatment with the Bluray a mirror imaged soundtrack.

Well I like it for the (story performances visual effects score and sound effects) but not necessarily in that order.

I like it as a whole, brilliant listen fun.

Angry Blu-ray format friend or foe? The re-mix!

Since buying this so called format “perfect picture sound” consumer medium to end all other video consumer mediums it is not!

The biggest issue with the format is the studios who control and who are destroying vandalizing their own classic films

So far I have around 2 okay that might seem quite insouciant. (I assure you all) this is going to get much, much worse as they keep producing old film titles with original six-track Dolby stereo mixes

2010 The year we make contact (1984) has left and right front (phantom signal folded onto the discrete centre channel).

Also the same signal from the fronts has been (folded onto the surrounds) creating (a fake split-stereo surround) this can not be undone by the consumer. (The paying consumer) who might not even be aware that he/she has just been deceived by the studio with a fake like Dolby/dts 5.1 BLU-RAY!

This morning I received Blue Thunder and it only took me, less than 2 seconds flat out! To listen to chapter 12 with left and right and surrounds both muted!

The centre channel should only carry (Foley and sound effects)! (Not music)! The music track is only mixed onto or fades into the centre channel as and when the original mixing them wants it there!

This makes it hard to hear other faint like sounds on the centre discrete plus it also masks other low end bass sounds such as (score) that has different mix, over conventional Dolby stereo 4.2.4 mixes where it would be near to impossible to tell.

Bluray standards by studios is a total disgrace to old classic films and this is how (we the fans are treated)!

The original monaural surrounds produced for the film only fade in when called for (hence the term discrete)! Now they are active all the time because the so called total idiot who produced this with total load of rubbish as utterly destroyed the original Dolby stereo mix.

Where the surrounds sometimes should (only carry music and few effects) now carries left and right stereo fronts folded onto the monaural surrounds making it very hard to detect true discrete.

I think the term DolbyTure is joke! It should be called DolbyFake! and this is only down to someone who thinks, he knows better how to re-mix.

Wow I leaned how to do basic mixing a music and technology college its not a big deal to learn basics. But who ever did this is total f$*()king amateur and I want his NAME!

I don’t want to be compensated with money back! I want SONY PICTURES UK! To personally send me a replacement with the original mix like that on the (first edition region 2 DVD)!
I want this so called idiot fired from his job, because what right does he have to re-mix this film into a holy mess!

Its like listening to Dolby stereo 4.2.4 because if you mute the LCR and listen to the surrounds you can hear parts of the original dialogue faint in the distance like in (chapter 15, time 01:31:12) the original mix had parts of the flight controller and the pilots voices many db down in the mix on left and right fronts, while it was many db up in the discrete centre with total different signature sound.

I presume all, that the US version and many more alike are the same I assume it all!

Now go and listen in the exact way, and then get sending emails to have this re-mixing nonsense stopped!

NOW THEN!

I’m trying to get in contact with SONY PICTURES UK but their offices at London is, "like trying to get blood out of stone!" Or a needle in haystack because the reception is very unprofessional, they try to put you though I say again “try to put you though”.

Default Re-listening to "Blue Thunder" (1983) region 2 DVD and region B Bluray

Listen to first edition DVD chapter 14, time 45 minutes 32 seconds, where Roy Scheider character (Frank Murphy) has recurring nightmare of his days in Vietnam.

The centre carries vocal breathing and mumbling moaning sounds of his nightmare.

As the dream fades to frontal view from a helicopter we then hear what sounds like an argument of Vietnamese solder, that is then thrown from the helicopter, his scream is loud and clear in the centre!

The left and right fronts carry music and a disoriented sound of the rotor blades, with snyth high frequency music, as the solder is thrown from the helicopter the music has mild sudden rise drums beating fast, then music starts to fade back as we see (Frank Murphy) and his girlfriend (Kate) looking at him.

The monaural surrounds carries an almost similar sound of the fronts to immerse around the audience or listening at home in a (six-track Dolby stereo form).

Bluray region B (chapter 7, time 00:47:25)

Centre channel so called discrete! As the same sound almost except the rich discreteness of (Frank Murphy) breathing and mumbling moaning sounds now have music content play over it!

LMAO at same chapter 7, time 00:48:02 where (Kate) looks at him in worried way we hear (Frank Murphy) moaning like he’s having a sexual orgasm, I kid you not! WTF!

So not only has it had sounds folded from stereo front onto the surrounds its like someone as looped over the scene again and is taking the piss with the films soundtrack.

The left and right front has more of the original mix in some parts except the sound of augment has been slyly folded from centre and dumped onto the left and right fronts!

When the Vietnamese solder is thrown from the moving helicopter its the same dramatic rise in music, then slowly fades down in the mix, with distant sound re-mix of the solders scream.

The surrounds has higher sound that is far too in my face. The Vietnamese solder augment is heard (with centre back turned on) falling away into the distance centre back after its been panned subtlety over left and right surrounds, I had to make sure what was happening with these so called split-stereo surrounds.

Default Extras "Blue Thunder" (1983) Bluray region B

The extras seem worthy for £8.99 sigh. That’s roughly the cost of average cinema ticket, except I want the whole original Dolby film mix. They could at least kept the original six-track Dolby stereo mix intact along with re-mix or decent re-mix because this one sounds like it was put together by 15 year old in mommies basement.

Quote from the Bluray review http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Blue-T...y-Review/5031/

Blue Thunder rumbles onto Blu-ray with a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack. This mix offers an active sound field; the film's opening jumble of radio chatter may be heard emanating from every corner of the soundstage, and there's never a lack of back-channel information. Throughout the film, the sounds of helicopters may be heard buzzing about the soundstage, the rotors sweeping across the listening area with fair level of volume and clarity. Minor ambience also finds its way into the mix, offering a fairly realistic sense of space in the less aggressive sequences. A chase sequence near the end of he film makes for a fantastic listen; choppers maneuver through the soundstage, gunfire erupts with authority, and it's all accompanied by a powerful low end that completes an engaging aural sequence. Dialogue delivery is smooth and intelligible throughout. Blue Thunder makes for another high quality lossless soundtrack from Sony.

^^^Well the reason why he was hearing it, from every corner was that he was unaware of the original mix that he obviously didn’t listen to before judging this.

Right now I’m, listening the original "Blue Thunder" (1983) on DVD region 2 with the LCR/LFE.1 muted the art of the monaural discrete independent surrounds just sounds like it does in70mm. It just makes me cringe listening to bluray while image is smart only one part of the 50% that makes up a film has been ruined for my, enjoyment, no thanks to SONY PICTURES BLURAY UK!

I was also thinking about buying "Glory" (1989) on Bluray and since its from SONY PICTURES BLURAY UK I fear the same issue! The re-mix of the stereo fronts being folded onto the split-surrounds as the first edition has tiny hint of stereo surrounds (on sound effects only).

The score element on the surrounds is in monaural while it does carry in stereo over the front left and right with different signature mix in the discrete centre.

Yes I take home cinema and even cinema listening very serious, I don’t just go and slouch in seat I’m upright and listening!

Wow the chapter 24, 79m 42s the score cutting in on monaural surrounds on Blue Thunder region 2 DVD fantastic, parts of the overhead effects like when passing underneath a bridge or a discrete sound Blue Thunder passing overhead wicked!

Only those who slouch in seat at home or at the cinema are poor listeners!

I have witnessed this firsthand with my friends all they want is to show-off they have home cinema, and when I quiz them afterwards they have very little clue?

They might as well just have flat screen with tint 1 inch speakers!

Wow the build up of tension chapter 26, time 87m 24 with kittle drum beating discretely on the monaural surrounds as the heat-seeking missiles home in on Blue Thunders heat exhaust.

The explosion is only carried out over LCR (no LFE.1 content at this point) most of the bass mid is carried by the LCR as it should be.

Nope get the first edition DVD release for its exclusive original six-track Dolby stereo mix! Get the special edition version cheap as chips for the extras that was produced I think around early 2004? 2005?

I’ve put the "Blue Thunder" so called orignal (1983) Bluray back its case, I’m disgusted with the appalling re-mix!

You’re just go wow, wow and have pardon me, a wet orgasmic daydream, only to really find out later the stereo surrounds have been faked!

This might have been done with last DVD edition? I which was only region 1, DVD I believe?

Only way is for someone to A B and C the there versions only one is the original six-track Dolby stereo theatrical mix! and that is (A)

B needs to be checked out and if it’s the same original mix as (A) then someone has purposely re-mixed this for Bluray where it doesn’t show-off the original mix with DolbyTrue technology.

Now then! Be weary of BS Bluray reviews because who ever did that review needs to edit the review.

What about it you probably know I have it on Bluray and hmm since it was released early 2000 I see no reason for the Dolby mix to be botched up?

Some of the bright optical and some production visual effects tend to display too high contrast where slight bit of green is smearing around the effects. Like in the car-park there is shootout and I noticed something unnatural that wouldn’t display when projected in a cinema, I worked in cinema and shots that have bright arch light visuals don’t have artefacts.

Its pure xenon light onto pure film.

They need to soften the level for neutral look that mirrors close to the film print. Its down to us how much brightness is used for darks blacks, contrast for whites, colour that should look like skin tone, not faces looking like giant lobsters walking around on the screen. Sigh

I couldn’t agree more. Theo the theatrical/international version sound is bothering me. This was realised (1982) since (1978) till around the last time 70mm prints with rare only few handful was produced with split-stereo-surrounds or (Dolby format 43) Dolby format 42) was with monaural surrounds and often two sub bass tracks playing the same signal twice for inner-left and inner-right.

I guess in later years the signal was feed to the subs.

Format 43 is close or is what Dolby stereo SR-D or Dolby digital 5.1 is. But a few rare originals that get transferred for laserdisc DVD and Bluray should only have monaural surround or split-stereo surrounds.

So I’m now wondering if the mix for “Blade Runner” was slyly remixed on the theatrical/international side. I don’t give a hoot about the directors cut around early 1992 was it? Dolby stereo SR-D was around then so they can pretty much re-mix the soundtrack for the new cut.

Its originals that I want!

Then again if, it did have split-stereo-surrounds it might be unannounced. The list on in-70mm is fairly accurate, to a small degree of information I guess.

http://www.in70mm.com/library/process/dolby/index.htm

A few of the Star Trek films at the Empire Leicester Square (1989) in-70mm had what appeared and where I was looking when the Enterprise leaps to warp speed whooshing along the sidewalls on side and then the other side. So if that is not monaural then it must be split-stereo surrounds.

Its like when you look at SDDS8 and who controls that? SONY PICTURES! Who said they will (never release this to the consumer market) something like that?

They have about the same, very few SDDS8 releases compared to the standard SDDS6 which is the same as dts Dolby stereo SR-D.

That’s a little hard to say? But…

First off how old are you? Not to be rude it has a lot to do with the question?

I’m 43 in 9 days providing of course, I don’t get ran over by passing bus?
