United Kingdom Salo (br)

According to two different sources Pasolini's Salo has been set for a September 22 release in the UK. The previous release of this film in the UK was courtesy of the BFI and I have not seen any news indicating that they will be releasing on BR. But, Tartan own the rights for the rest of the Pasolini's works so if Salo has become their property perhaps there is a chance that the UK distrib could surprise us with another great transfer (The Seventh Seal).

LOL, I have heard the stories about that one. I think I'll pass.

However I want EVERYTHING to be out on blu eventually, so I support it's release.

Here's the coverwork for the 2DVD set which streets on the same day the BR does. I expect the BR cover to be identical:

If there's a movie I would advise everyone who hasn't watched it to be careful about, this one would be it.

If you got to know the context that the movie wants to represent, maybe you'll like it. Odds are you won't, no matter what.

I've watched this movie only once, and once is enough. Not only I wouldn't like to go through it again, but I can't get it out of my head. Any shocking scene (and there are thousands) is hard to shake.

So get informed before you buy it or rent it. And anyway, watch it under your own risk.

I really want to upgrade my old Criterion LD for this...but is this going to be region free, and can I play a PAL BD on my Sony laptop??

Sorry, if it's a stupid question. I used to play PAL DVDs on a laptop, but I thought the BD might be an issue.

As far as the BD is concern, you only have to be careful it is REGION FREE. In HD, the Pal-Ntsc system is not an issue. (still, amazon.uk is incorrectly labeling some blu-rays they sell as PAL, which can sometimes be applicable to the extras, if they're not HD, but not to the main feature).

If the BD is not Region Free, remember that Criterion has recently issued a new DVD, totally improved in quality and loaded with extras.

Because criterion has only released salo on DVD not BD.

BFI is releasing it on BD.

Yes, and there is controversy regarding the SD from Criterion. A brief sequence has been cut.

It looks like disc 2 of the BFI will be in PAL SD. Someone on another forum contacted them, and it is still unclear if the BD version will be "region free". Thanks to everyone who responed.

BFI already released an official announcement that the disc would be region-free. I have not seen amendments indicating that the specs have been changed.

Thanks for clearing that up. Do you have a link? Someone in another forum caused the confusion. Happy to hear this news!
