Yes, there are characters that were removed from the story for the film, but the three you mention were most definitely in the movie. Susan was played by Pamela Sue Martin, Robin was played by Eric Shea, and the priest you mention was played by Gene Hackman. Robin and Susan's parents were not in the movie and a playboy named Huey was replaced in the story as Nonnie's love interest by Martin, played by Red Buttons, who is also in the book but becomes a composite of both characters.
