I'm not quite done with my Godzilla rewatch but here's the Heisei series ranked from best to worst:

    1. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
    2. Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla II
    3. Godzilla vs. Mothra
    4. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla
    5. Godzilla vs. Biollante
    6. The Return of Godzilla
    7. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah

SpaceGodzilla reminds me of Biollante: a sub-par - but not bad - film almost saved by a cool original kaiju. At least SpaceGodzilla actually shows up in more than 2 scenes and there are very little English-language actors at all in his movie so I rank it above Biollante (who I like more as a kaiju, however). SG ranks squarely in the middle of the Heisei series overall in my opinion.

This time around I noticed that the 2 actresses who played the Cosmos showed up again in GvMG II in a cameo as psychic schoolteachers!

MechaGodzilla '93 is my favorite Heisei film so far (with two to go). Suit design and MG music theme are significantly worse than their Showa counterparts but there's no GvKG-level awfulness here. Some of Baby G's behavior reminded me of my dog's, which I found amusing. Rodan actually looked pretty good. Better than most of his Showa puppets/suits. I'm still confused as to how he revived Godzilla and what his relationship was to the baby.

And yes, Battra is so cool. Yet another briefly-used kajiu that should have had a return appearance.

Didn't she only briefly appear in SpaceGodzilla? I know she's in 3 out of the 6 Millennium films, though.

I liked Godzilla vs. Mothra ('92) a little less than I did before but still way more than the previous Heisei films. Ifukube's score, Mothra teaming up with Battra and some fairly entertaining action sequences help me to overlook most of the movie's flaws. It's a Mothra/Mothra vs. Godzilla rehash but at least it's mostly competent and repeating a storyline that was actually good to begin with. And thank christ that the English voice actors are given minimal screentime.

I really love Mothra so that also makes me biased.

Even if I end up not liking the upcoming movie, I still hope it makes a huge amount of money so we get more Godzilla Blu-rays in the future.

And you should use that link I sent you to watch King Kong vs. Godzilla and the Japanese cut of Godzilla 2000!

Now to go cleanse my palette with one of my favorite Godzilla sequels: Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster.

Classic Media REALLY needs to upgrade this one to Blu, since the print on their DVD is in pretty rough shape.

haha well good, I feel a bit better then. Especially after having unleashed the bulk of my dissatisfaction. I still have Mothra-Destoroyah to rewatch so I'm sure I'll have more negative - but at least a few positive - things to add.

Oddly, I'm looking forward to rewatching G2K the most from the Millennium series. I plan to see the Japanese AND American versions this time, since they're supposedly very different. I've even seen more than a few people claim the American version is better! By contrast, virtually no one says that about Godzilla, King of the Monsters or Godzilla 1985.
