Well Wabo...I found a newer McIntosh Blu-ray player (also broken) haha and reached out the McIntosh to see if they could service it. This is the 891 model which does 3D. This is what they told me.

"Unfortunately, the MVP891 is pretty much in the same boat as the MVP881. Parts are limited at best, so I’d have to advise avoiding this model.

I wish that I had better news to report."

These are literally all paperweights. Absolutely unacceptable. They made that player until 2015. Glad I didn't commit to buying it. FYI: It is being sold for a grand on eBay & Audiogon.

Heh…I actually purchased it used for a fraction of the original price. It is weird they don’t have at least a few parts on a shelf in their warehouse. I read on a forum that the player is a clone from a Denon but the mechanism could also be from Pioneer or Panny. Totally up for a long distance shot if the player can be resurrected!

Mine didn’t get much use either which is why this is so frustrating. It’s a tough call. She’s a very expensive paper weight at the moment. I contacted a repair place up in CT. The guy said he didn’t see any replacement parts anywhere but would check with Mc. It’s pretty nuts given the player isn’t really all that old. I mean my OPPO 203 will be 8 years old next year and I can still get it serviced. McIntosh = the Rolls Royce of the industry and they tell me sorry and that they wished they had better news. Completely unacceptable for a $8k unit and existing format.

I hope the CT guy will at least look at it. If he’s got to keep it for a year hunting for parts then so be it. Otherwise I’ll have to sell it for parts. I guess I could load music onto a freaking SD card and use the reader built into the player.

Wabo- My beloved McIntosh player is now a paper weight. When a disc is spinning it makes a weird grinding noise inside and the tray randomly retracts if I try to insert a disc. A few times it’s gotten stuck. Apparently I need a new drive mechanism but since the unit is discontinued, I’m out of luck. A bit surprised to hear back from McIntosh headquarters telling me they had no parts and nothing they could do.

How is your unit treating you?

Pffft. I grew up there but now I’m 3 hours away. The Toledo Zoo is one of the best. You should go to Cedar Point!

I honestly don't remember where I came across them! You were going to enjoy some tequila shots after a long day... remember the content, but not the thread! And I remember the Experience... oh the good times! I'm sad I wasn't old enough to drink at Quark's when I was going, and never went back after I turned 21... I recently came across all of the original recipes that were posted by an ex-employee, and I've been drinking my way through their menu ever since! Enjoy a phase shot or a Saurian Brandy out of those glasses for me, and thanks for sharing the memories!

Hey, I know this is completely nuts, but I saw a post of yours from a few years back talking about some glasses you'd gotten from The Star Trek Experience, and I was wondering if by any chance you still have them and might be willing to sell them? I miss that place like crazy, but I never had the opportunity to pick up any of their barware. No worries if you're not interested in selling, but I figured it couldn't hurt to reach out!

    Thanks so much,

    -Matt
