The issue you point out is a combination of incompetence and indifference.

There are good people on the other side of the Atlantic that know exactly what is going on. Unfortunately, even though they are knowledgeable people, their voices and opinions are meaningless.

You continue to see such terrible misfires because many projects are funded by the government -- the CNC gets plenty of safe funding this way -- as well as parties that provide donations which in return secure excellent publicity. It is a vicious circle.

You do not need a "restoration expert" to tell you that what was done for Purple Noon, for instance, is criminal. Any film lover can see the obvious:

Firstly, thanks for your in depth reviews as they are well appreciated by me to help me to better understand the film, restoration efforts, features and the in-depth quality of the film on the BD media. Reading the disappointing Criterion review on https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Le-Ce...lu-ray/307218/, (Le Cercle Rouge), I wonder given your expertise, why doesn't people from Criterion or Studiocanal consult with you folks prior to releasing these films to ascertain if the restored film is being accurately represented? Sounds like a common sense question but does not necessarily mean its being applied properly.
