I'm sorry, I was wrong about the spelling of Nova Pilbeam's name. And you replied graciously . I remembered her from "Young and Innocent," and like her work. I guess I wanted to be wrongheaded, and should be more thoughtful when I post. Regards

    Hi Pro-B,

With regards the original aspect ratio of the Japanese film The Ballad of Narayama, I thought all pre-1970 scope films were shot in 2.35 to 1. (after 1970, the aspect ratio became the now commonly used 2.39 to 1 AR) Just wanted to bring this to your attention as this film was shot in 1958.

    Regards

Hello eppis1. Thank you for your note.

The name of the actress is indeed as it appears in the review, Nova, not Nora. Here's a bit more on her:

Thank you and Merry Christmas to you

I think the "Man who knew too much" review is good. But, there was a typo in the spelling of Nora (Nova, by mistake) Pilbeam in the review. Regards and Happy holliday.

Pro-B. I have just watched Americano (Mathieu Demy) and was disgusted with the video compression (not grain. I understand 16mm grain). Truly awful. It was difficult to spot a scene without it. I noticed the review on the site said there was no problem what so ever.

Interestingly my copy was seriously delayed and I would guess that it was part of a new batch of prints. Have you heard of anything like this happening before?

I have now tried on 3 totally different systems. All with different players and displays. They all have a upscalled badly compressed look to it.

Needless to say that it is now going on the get rid of pile. Pity really because I thought the film was great.

    Ta Dono
