Mothra vs. Godzilla is of course one of the very best films in the franchise but I like to think of G as having a massive hangover in it. He wakes up underground, wondering where he is, then literally stumbles around, trips and falls, etc. He see a giant egg and decides to have breakfast but a huge moth appears to keep him away from it.

Yeah I figured the language barrier has something to do with it but I still get the impression that the Japanese actors are mostly Shakespearan in comparison.

Is KKvG the only Godzilla movie you haven't seen?

The two scenes on the nuclear sub in King Kong vs. Godzilla have mind-meltingly awful acting.

Has there ever been an instance of Toho hiring a good English-speaking actor for a Godzilla movie? Because I can't think of any off the top of my head. They're all so terrible.

Yeah I expect my opinion will change for at least some of the movies this time around!

I'm going to respond to your messages soon but I just wanted you to know that I've decided to try to rank all the Godzilla films by the three eras. It doesn't quite seem fair to rank all of them together considering how different Showa, Heisei and Millennium were from each other. Then again, maybe I'll eventually get around to conglomerating them all into one giant list. This will require second viewings for many of the Godzilla films. Wish me luck!

I've purchased Terror of MG, Mothra vs. Godzilla and Ghidorah on DVD from Classic Media after sending them another e-mail requesting they release their titles on Blu-ray. I think those are my favorite Godzilla sequels. I almost pulled the trigger on Invasion of Astro-Monster but it slides into the too campy territory at around the time Godzilla does his infamous space dance. Also it's pretty much a sci-fi alien invasion movie with some kaiju thrown in, which depending on your tastes is either a good or bad thing. I don't like how the two monster battle scenes are rather arbitrary and over far too quickly. Sure, it's cool to see Godzilla and Rodan battle King Ghidorah on the surface of another planet but it makes no sense why the aliens brought them up there in the first place. That movie has some big plot holes. Plus, King Ghidorah's best appearance was in the previous film, when the suit looked great and he was a psychotic planet destroyer instead of an aliens' pet.

I know GMK is a fan favorite but I found it somewhat dull. I also didn't like Godzilla being portrayed as pure evil. Even in the original, he was sympathetic and his death is quite moving. And King Ghidorah is an easily defeated hero of the world, wtf. It had some unique ideas though, I'll give it that. Maybe I should give some of the Millennium films another shot (not Final Wars though, that movie is so stupid) but Showa is my favorite Godzilla series.

I guess I'll have to wait for your Godzilla movie ranking after you have your upcoming marathon!

I've never seen a Gamera movie but I know they're well liked so at some point I should probably change that. The more I think about it, the more I dislike the Heisei Godzilla films. I still for some reason - probably the beautiful Ifukube score - enjoy Godzilla vs. Mothra (I know that one is not well liked by the hardcore fans) and Destroyah has its moments but it's mainly the actual death of Godzilla - along with Ifukube's score - that is truly special. All of the suits in this era seem to have rigor mortis - giant plush butterflies included.

I understand. I'm the same way with James Bond: I must own every movie no matter how subpar it may be!

As for Godzilla, I'm of the opinion that Ishiro Honda is the master of Japanese sci-fi/kaiju movies. He also directed all of my favorites from the Showa era.

Have you ever ranked the Godzilla movies from favorite to least favorite?
