I guess why I am asking is because Sony has put so much into the BD. On the other hand MS is a corporate giant too and they have invested largely in HD. To be honest I could care less either way. I just want a solid player that will play a good abundance of movies. ie: If I get a BD player does the future show it will have more movies? I am a Netflix guy so all I am going to do is mark the spot for either HD or BD. If it's BD then they will send me movies for my BD player. If they dont have my selection in BD then they send me the regular DVD.

Also, does the BD player do an upconversion like some of the new HD players?

Yes all BLU-RAY players have standard DVD up conversion. BLU-RAY technically has better picture quality with higher bit rate titles and larger capacity compared to the HD-DVD format. 50GB BLU-Ray discs compared to 30GB HD-DVD discs. When it comes to BLU-RAY players there are several brands to choose from, Sony, Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic, and Philips. When looking at HD-DVD players you have only one choice Toshiba.
Now when it comes to movies Warner and Paramount Pictures are format neutral, which means movies are released in both formats. Now when it comes to exclusive studio releases from Disney, 20th Century Fox, and Sony Pictures are only available in the HDTV BLU-RAY format. Universal Studios is the only exclusive studio that the HD-DVD camp has.
So yes the BLU-RAY format is the better format to choose. Currently know one makes a working combo player. The LG combo is not a true HD-DVD player since it does not play the interactive menus. The only reason to own a combo player would be if Universal Studios remains exclusive to the HD-DVD format.
Basically either BLU-RAY will win this format war or both formats will coexist. BLU-RAY camp has a very strong consumer electronics support and very large studio support compared to the HD-DVD camp.
