Sounds like I need to watch more anime.
I double-checked, and the
Excel Saga episode I was thinking of is actually the one right before the New Year's special (entitled "Big City Part II"). It's the detective-style one, but it takes place around Christmas. Maybe it's not as festive as I remember.
