The answer will depend on which high-end player and which high-end AVR. As I indicated in the chipset thread, the Denon 3800BDCI player's DAC's/analogue section is "borrowed" from the Denon 5308 AVR. Unless the AVR is as good or better than the 5308, using the 3800's analog out will give you better audio than HDMI, assuming the AVR is set to direct mode such that the AVR isn't reprocessing the analog inputs from the 3800 thus negating the advantage.
