The exterior shots of Lois Lane's apartment was done at 240 Central Park South in New York City. However the balcony scenes were shot on the Pinewood Studios famed M Stage. There are behind the scenes photos of these.
Interesting bit of information. During the Manhattan shoot, in July 1977 the famed New York City blackout happened, delaying the shoot for hours. It was suspected at first that the immense power draw from the mobile generators on the Superman set were the cause of the power failure. It was not the case, but still to think that Superman was suspected of causing the blackout is quite hilarious.
