The thing is, Sony will have to ensure that any changes to the PS3 stay compatible with the existing consoles, so if you buy one on launch or wait three years, you'll still be able to do all the same stuff.
What interests me is the idea that the PS3 may operate as a PC in the sense that you could browse the internet, instant message (video message too), and e-mail using your PS3. That would all be pretty easy to implement, the danger of course is that spam and viruses could start to appear aimed at crippling your console if Sony opened the console too much, as long as they keep it closed and secure it could be a great way to communicate without the need for a traditional PC.
I certainly like the idea of HD video messaging using an HD PS3 eyetoy!
