Whatever the case, “Every Secret Thing” is a misfire on multiple levels, only slightly redeemed by yet another good performance from a Fanning and some strong supporting work on the fringe of this cautionary tale.

Macdonald and Fanning are expert at giving expression to the feelings and resentments not found in the dialogue.

Dakota Fanning is fine as one of the girls adjusting to life on the outside—she does well to suggest the toll that an act of naive cruelty has taken on a post-adolescent conscience

Instead, the movie works best in silent moments, like Lane's mother alone in her thoughts, or Fanning's Ronnie regarding herself in the mirror, while hiding her wrists torn up with self-inflicted scars.

As for the girls, Fanning is nicely held-back as the secretive Ronnie, hiding behind raccoon makeup and a poker face that masks bottomless need.

Looks like a hot mess of a movie, but I think I'll grab it on sale now for $9.99 on Vudu. Love the cast, so I'm interested to see it for myself. Both Fanning's are terrific actresses, just seems like Dakota is content with making indie pictures right now and they are more risky than the mainstream projects Elle is doing.
