For music, the early digital copies sold were worse than CD copies, and the newer ones are better, but still worse than CD. We weren't paying for remastering, we were just paying a fee for better encoding. That's not really the same with video.

Except on iTunes they did offer an upgrade fee when they went from copy protected 128kbps tracks to unprotected 256kbps tracks ('iTunes+'). I think it was 30 pence per track in the UK?
Apple will want to do something similar with HD to 4K but it will be up to the studios whether they agree to it.
