I think
M*A*S*H is a grossly under-rated film these days. The key to enjoying viewing it for the first time is to completely forget that there was ever a TV show with the same name, just come to it fresh without expectations or pre-judgments. Altman took the service comedy genre and subverted it into a bitingly funny comment on war in general and Vietnam in particular. Sutherland and Gould are a hoot together, a sort of Hope and Crosby on the road to Korea. One of my top five Altmans, maybe top three. Enjoy.
A note about Altman's use of over-lapping dialog and mumbling characters. You're not supposed to understand every word. It's kind of like going to a party where there's a lot of people talking at once. You pick up what you can and have fun.
