As for the DE, if you haven't seen it I would certainly recommend snapping up a copy of the DVD. Personally I think it's a good alternative but I don't think it really addresses the majority of the film's problems. I would say it's my favourite of the two cuts though.

Well put and I agree with everything you said. I rushed out to Theater along with every other Trekker when it first came out. I actually fell asleep in the theater and that's coming from a huge Trek fan. Although to be fair I was working graveyard shift at that point in my life and may have even fallen asleep watching The Terminator.

It has grown on me a quite a bit over the years though as it was great to see the gang back in the saddle again.
[Show spoiler]I guess the real problem with the film for me was that it appeared that all they did was throw 2 episodes from TOS together and made a movie when I was looking forward to seeing something new (Episodes: Changeling & Doomsday Machine). That and the seemingly endless staring into space without any dialog, pretty sure that's where I nodded off.
As you said though the Director's Cut does remedy some of this and is my preferred viewing experience as well.
