In that thread, Cyber Visions suggested a method for updating Quick Play, but says that standard versions of PowerDVD and WinDVD won't play.
This is nearly the same problem except that in using hp support, the techs have long since had me remove Quick play and replace it with PowerDVD and WinDVD. The hp techs had me download PowerDVD from wherever I could find it. So I downloaded the trial version of PowerDVD. I was in a hurry with the tech on the line so I did not notice that the trial version will not play Blu-ray, and the real version is $100.
Is there any way to get something to work without spending $100? After reading Cyber Visions comments, I don't have any faith that even that will work. I looked around on the hp site and only found links to WinDVD8 downloads and patches (which don't seem to work anymore). hp sent another player to try. The new player works slightly better because it can navigate to the movie (Pirates III) using WinDVD8. However, when the movie reaches some intensity while playing, the stutter shows up.
Any constructive help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dave
No problem Grasshopper - Sensei Elvis will get you fixed up. There's always an option.

Those HP support people are absolute idiots. Every week we get a new HDX or other HP owner on the Notebook Review site with the exact same problem, and every time QP 3.7 fixes it.

When I first got my HDX and needed a specific update to fix this they gave me no less than 6 different and incorrect solutions to the same problem. I already knew what the fix was, but getting them to understand anything was impossible. They even got me to try and use WinDVD - what I know and you unfortunately didn't is that WinDVD has had many problems on HP systems, and is the reason they switched to QuickPlay for BD's. The stutter problem you mentioned is one problem that's been around for quite some time. I can't believe they actually told you to use it. Well, in fact, I guess I can....

I used to manage an HP OEM Support Center about 20 years ago, and back then HP Support was top end. Training was great too - I was certified on several major HP systems and had the privilege of going to Mountain View when it still existed. How time flies. Most of us old HP techs are appalled at what HP's support has become. The acronym I've come up with to describe the Support personnel they're using now is BDt - Book & Database tech. I use a lowercase t for tech because that word doesn't apply in its true meaning when referring to them. There's a lot to be said for actual experience fixing systems.

Anyway....

The option you still have that they probably haven't considered or told you about (they're not that smart) is that you can reinstall QuickPlay directly from the web, then update it to version 3.7 from within the program, which should fix you up.

To see what you need to do, go here to this URL at HP:

http://tinyurl.com/6h8soq

You want to click on the 3rd version on the list to get the correct install or scroll down to Vista QuickPlay softpaq.

You've probably already done so, but make sure you've got all traces of the original install removed before you start. I'd get rid of WinDVD or any other BD programs you've tried as well.

Hopefully this will get you on the right track. I'm sorry you had to go through all of the hassle. Even though I'm no longer part of the HP Support system, it really kills me and other Engineers and Techs who kept a certain high level of standards when it came to customer support. That they've lost or completely abandoned what we worked hard for really pisses us of to no end.

If you still have problems, I'm usually at the NotebookReview.com site in the HDX Owner's Lounge. There are a bunch of us old engineers/techs there that contribute on a regular basis. They have some pretty good responders here (I wish they were better on HP systems) so I don't stop by here as often. Post or PM me and I'll keep working the problem with you if you want, or at least let me know if you have success.
