Brining the "Fire and Ice series" to HBO was being discussed many months ago and seemed to have fell through during the writer's strike; with even the author reporting on his website a few months ago that the deal looked to be dead.
Seems things have finally been taken off the back burner.
It's a great boon to have this series on HBO. The stories are filled with sex and violence (with some extreme degrees) - and could never be properly told on a network.
If you are unfamiliar with the series - think "Rome" (HBO series) with fantasy elements sprinkled throughout and you begin to get the idea.
Now, if only the author would get that fifth book out already!

Quote:
HBO has greenlit the pilot for a series based on George R.R. Martin’s series of “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels .
The plan is to adapt one novel each season, starting with 1996’s “A Game of Thrones.”
Writing the HBO version are Martin himself (who previously wrote on CBS' "Beauty and the Beast") and feature writers David Benioff (“The 25th Hour,” “Troy”) and D.B. Weiss (who authored a screenplay for the proposed “Halo” movie).
These are apparently very long, grown-up fantasy novels, with thousands of characters – the major ones quite flawed and complex - and lots of sex, violence and political intrigue.
According to the Hollywood Reporter:
Combined with True Blood, this also suggests an interesting, AintItCoolNews-targeted direction for the network. Less edgy-PBS, more R-rated Comic Con.
