Sounds dumb to me. Nintendo has said they design Link with both male and female tastes in mind, so it's easy for everyone to put themselves in his shoes. This seems like a step in the other direction.
Games like FFX or Persona never had this problem. Tidus and the other Mains have canon names, the npcs just skirt around it in dialogue.
