I don't necessarily agree with that. You win an Oscar and typically, good roles present themselves. It seems to me he made some bad choices post-Oscar, and that's why he is ultimately out of the spotlight now. But for every good, challenging role he chose(Radio, Men of Honor, etc.) he chose a shitty, paycheck role (Boat Trip, Snow Dogs, Rat Race).
And as far a black actors are concerned, the two you mentioned (Smith and Washington) are marquee actors. Gooding Jr. is a fine actor, but he's just not a leading man( with limited exception). IMHO.
