I don't think it's a flaw, not just because it's clearly defined (we see his death, she explains who he was to her), but also because I think it ties in with Ethan's story of revenge against the death of his wife, and Brandt's tension with him over his perceived failures.
It's not perfect, but I think that's why that part of character development is in the story, to play off the other parts of dealing with loss.
The part of GP that I didn't get (I probably missed something) is if Ethan really killed all those guys that supposedly killed his wife, just to make her cover of death more bullet proof?
