Oh boy (or... girl? ), you're in for a treat! I love the sequels, even more than the original film. I practically owned my video store's copies because I would hoard them for so long, over and over. Racked in a lot of late fees on those two bad boys. They're both basically semi-serious riffs on the '80s slasher genre, with tons of references to Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, etc. It's almost impossible for any fan of golden age slashers to not love these two.

They were actually shot back-to-back (and the story is fairly interwoven). The docs Scream Factory commissioned are amazing too. They're split into two parts that flow together quite nicely, almost like one big, definitive documentary on them both (or as definitive as possible, since I sadly doubt anyone will ever convince Pam Springsteen to talk about her stint as Angela).

I love both of them, but I gotta say III was the one I rented the most, partly because it was most often available. But I fell in love. Unfortunately, it got butchered by the MPAA, even worse than the first two films. There are whole death sequences cut from the final version of the film (viewable in SD on the blu-ray's workprint version). But if you can look past the unfortunate lack of gore, the comedy is on point and the roughness is very charming.

Hope you enjoy them! Can't wait to read your reviews, I assume in the respective thread.

I wouldn't call II or III "meanspirited." Maybe the first film, since it has a much nastier tone, but the sequels are too fun to be labeled so harshly.
