I think they should only broadcast shows in 1080, people should be able to buy 720 TVs if they are too poor to afford a better one, but don't lower the quality of the source material for everone

Broadcasting companies do not choose a resolution based on how much it will annoy their customers. There are lots of reasons 720 is an option: frame rates, storage and decoding requirements, etc. You really should do your research before posting a rant like this.
