I saw this in a press screening here in the UK in October. It's superb - in line with live-action classics such as the Baby Cart or Zatoichi series, as well as a small number of HK 70s classics which involved both Chinese and Japanese combatants. People looking for a more realistic Ninja Scroll or simply top-class anime fight work should check this out. Easily some of the best work from studio BONES in years.

As a hard 15 (UK)/R-rated (US) feature it's the best anime I saw last year; however, for something more accessible to a wider audience, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was THE best anime I saw last year. Great work from MADHOUSE, following on from the brilliant Paprika, which was also adapted from a novel by the same author. Pretty sure if you like one you'll like the other.

But yeah, go see Sword of the Stranger if you want cool action.
