I have seen some of the negative comments regarding the new release. But if you would please, let's have more positive comments than negative. Yes, we are going to get a new mix based on that original 70mm 6 track mix very few people saw in '78. And yes, I'm sure the picture will be great in 4K (I have a 4K player that can play on any TV...namely the X Box One, thus the standard HDTV I have looks as great as it is gonna look, even better).
And yes, we all know the "final cut" situation, but remember, (and I will say it once more)...as Ilya said himself in the DVD commentary, even though the Salkinds had final cut privilege, they (in the case of SUPERMAN) worked hand in hand with both the studio and the director to produce a cut that was in the best interests of the audience, and the resulting 143 min. theatrical cut stands as a work of its own, and we must see it as such.
As for "Rock Around The Clock"'s absence in the TV cut...I can only conject the Salkinds dealt with licensing issues with that and "Only You" (which plays later in the Smallville scenes), which is why they were replaced. However, the music that did replace "Clock" in the TV cut (it is original John Williams source music, by the way, and not some generic music someone pulled from a stock library) sounds more suited to the time in which the scene is set, 1965. If we take the theatrical cut seriously, then maybe the Smallville radio station started to play Boss Radio (the format founded by media magnate Bill Drake)!!!
