Maybe im misremembering, but didn't the promotion and early critic/fan reviews hype this up like it was going to give you the feels of the original film? If that's the case then they did the film a disservice by setting up these expectations.
It doesn't seem like David Gordon Green was trying to emulate Carpenter at all. Not saying it's necessarily a bad thing since it's still a worthy sequel. It has the JC score and the climax brings some of that Halloween/Assault on Prescinct relentless intensity, but the film doesn't really have the look, feel, atmosphere of the original. Maybe some of the Michael stalking scenes. It feels very much like a modern horror film (which it is) instead of trying to be a JC style throwback.
