I woulda just stuck with the events of H1 and 2 since that is the complete night of Halloween 1978. At the very least, those events that occurred in 1 and 2 together makes for a stronger backbone to what has now become H40. Michael would be a burn victim adding to his unsettling presence as well as better reasoning for being down and out for so long, the aura that he's this undying monster(or incredibly lucky), Loomis would have been dead after the explosion no question. It would more convincingly validate Laurie's state of being and lifestyle after what she witnessed and endured.
Still say the sibling factor doesn't hurt the story and would add to the family dynamic that was present in H40. It would also give better reason as to why a doctor would become obsessively fascinated and protective of Michael, and why reporters want to investigate. A psycho who escapes a looney bin and kills 4 people and gets captured, doesn't really lend itself to the history books or the media hype.... but a psycho who kills 12 people on Halloween night surviving fatal gun shots, stab wounds, and an explosion on top of the scandalous nature of his relation to Laurie Strode... that just might do the trick.
