The reasons vary - some retire (Béla Tarr), a few have health problems (Andrew Davis), others prefer to do documentaries (Walter Salles) or TV and other kinds of art (David Lynch), while some just plain disappear (Stephen Sommers).

There are those who had a string of failures and seemingly couldn't overcome them (Martin Brest, Richard Kelly), or returned to their homeland (Jan De Bont, who served as cinematographer in a Dutch documentary in 2012), or have problems getting something made (Todd Field).

And there are those who just take their sweet time preparing their next projects (I assume Bennett Miller fits here).

That doesn't mean their fans, or people just interested in their work, don't yearn for their return.

Personally, I'd love to see Frank Darabont making another movie. His last one was The Mist, released almost 12 years ago.
