I'd try a different HDMI cable if you can, as well as plugging the player directly into the TV to see if that helps.
It's generally normal for the screen to go dark if the display detects changes in frame rate or resolution from a device, but you'd usually see a pop-up like you've changed to a different source (or when you press the display button on your remote). I'd try the suggestions I mentioned to see if that helps, it's unusual for a No Signal message or the display to try and ask for a source when doing so. They may help.
